Here is the ish.

I broke a long side axle shaft in my 80 recently and am now fixing it. I pulled the long side shaft and was surprised to see that the shaft broke about 10 inches in from the wheel, not the usual break near the splines.

So how do i get out the remaining shaft.

Also, I decided to take off the short sid shaft to see if i could push something through to push out the long side remaining shaft. When taking off the short side it will only slide out an inch then stops. wont budge. cant get it off any further.

what the hell?

I am worried i twisted the splines on the short side shaft when the long side broke and now it wont come out.

any ideas?

I have factory lockers.

so much for full float's being peice of cake to fix when you have a break

It sounds like a twist on the short side. Christo delt with that some time back, I don't remember the solution.

You may have to slide-hammer it out and then replace the spider?
even after the other shaft is out I dont think there is a "hole" through the middle to be able to push through. You may have to pull the actuator and see if you can force the shaft out from there.

dan,
Thanks for the input. Its pretty much worse case scenario. i will see if i cant get christo on the phone in the morning.

How about a big old magnet off of a speaker or such?. If the splines on that side are not twisted maybe it would work....

Will it still lock?

I tried the largest magnet i could find that would still fit in through the spindle. i have the rear axle on jack stands. I started the vehicle and tried locking the rear diff while turning the tires myself. nothing though. not sure if if was doing it enough to get it to lock.

what is the value in being able to lock the rear still?

That would indicate that the splines are still straight. If the borken shaft has twisted splines you are in a bad way I think.

You might try pulling the studs on that short side axle hub- then you could twist the axle a bit against the splines. Have no idea if that would help. Another way to accomplish this is to have a helper try to turn the driveshaft with the diff locked as you pull on the axle. As for the long side, only suggestion I would have is to pull the axle housing and stand it on end. Obviously a last-ditch effort.

When we did Christo's, we used a welding rod and arced  (spelling) it to the end of the shaft and pulled it out. The other side was twisted and we removed the actuator and used a torch, cut the shaft then removed everything. Don't know if that helped or not...

This is sorta funny. Sounds like someone has been playing hard :D Last year I broke my long side rear in the exact same place. You most likely spun your short side splines when the right side snapped. So if you try to force out your right shaft, it will essentially break your shift fork which slides the locker sleeve piece in and out. Here's my entire story. All I have to say is I feel very bad for you  The FJ80 front axle is killer however I tend to question the rear setup with the elocker. I feel your pain!!

ya that pretty much sucks..... thanks a ton publishing all that info... that gives me a way better idea of what happened and also confirms my worst case scenario. ...

Holy cow Borg...

I got your msg re: FF parts... I should have most of what you need here. Any luck getting that shaft out?

Man, if you have to torch that thing out, that is a HUGE bummer! I guess i would go with bobby long's super axles when reassembling so that this doesn't happen again for those few who really do play hard with their 80s.

I had to torch the locking collar off through the actuator housing hole. Then we remove the axle as per SGT's note.

I will not run a elocker rear 80 diff in a hard core anymore. However we will have upgraded rear 80 axles pretty soon. I run Mosser axles with locking hubs. I have not broken them yet, but have not tried to remove them to see what shape they are in.

All in all, pretty much a pita to fix.

Jared,

You are just fixing that now? Wasn't it in November that you broke it?

Hmmmmm...... does that mean this thread may turn into a vote for an ARB locker?!! That's was an entire thread in itself, and i beleive that most that the toyota elocker was superior. I always thought that the ARB air locker was the way to go. . . . . . . .

no it wont come out... Its prolly going to rocklogic next week to have them tear it down.

Prolly going to stick with an e-locker. I am going to try and avoid certain situations and going with stickier tires. just tone things down w abit.

its being toned back from where it never should have gone.. i will still hit hard trails.. fixing stuff like this is no fun.....
