Re-Gear for 35's

If it is transmission temperature that you are having an issue with, I would suggest starting with a transmission cooler. I am not sure if the early HDJ81's had the same transmission coolers that we have here on the late model gas trucks but I would look at something like that. The bigger the better. I don't see differential gearing helping a whole lot with trans temps. Diff gearing is mostly to get the truck back into it's stock power band. If you aren't having issues with power, get the transmission cooler sorted.

Yes, the 1991 HDJ81. Perhaps I should hunt around the diesel forum?

The US market got the tow package, including a very good transmission cooler, other markets didn't. Does yours have a cooler?

@Jgunner is actually running 37s and 4.88. I have driven his rig and it accelerates well considering the weight of his front/rear bumper and the 37s. From what I remember his setup is pretty close to what acceleration was like with the stock sized tires.

I personally am considering regearing too but I am on the fence as far as what ratio to go with, 4.88 or 5.29 or even high/low under drives in the transfer case.

My cruiser is JDM and either did not have the front mounted cooler or it was deleted by the PO when he installed an intercooler. The transmission lines do go into the bottom section of the radiator.

There’s no such thing as too big of a cooler if you are towing. Also if u have big tired and have not regeared there isn’t a tranny cooler big enough to fix your problem in my opinion.

Transmission Cooler for HDJ81

This is the reason I was curious about re-gearing. I think I have room to mount fan driven remote cooler under the chassis and may even have room for an addition fin type cooler near the radiator. I have gotten the A/T Hot light several times on mountain passes and realize now that it's set at over 300 deg and therefore is no bueno to get. Have checked the fluid that is nearly new synthetic AMSOIL and smells ok but time to fix this issue.
