I've looked at the price of gears but haven't seen anywhere what it costs time wise. Anybody know?

Not the expert but I looked into rebuilding a 3rd member recently. The rough estimates I got were $250 for new ring and pinion gears, $250 labor, $250 for new bearings, shims, seals, then add $150 for shipping to and from someone who knows what they're doing; or about $700-$1000 depending if the old bearings are reusable. HTH.
Edit: $250 was for an aftermarket R&P.

Kernal is pretty well on it. I have about $1,100 - $1,200 in mine but i bought spare chunks to minimize downtime, and ended up rebuilding an entire rear FF to swap in, plus I got all the bits to rebuild knuckles and brakes when I crack open the front, so I will probably be in the axles for more than half what I actually paid for the whole rig.....

Oh well there are worse things I could be pouring money into.

Around $450 per axle plus parts seems to be the going rate around here.

Don't forget the cost of front and rear axle jobs since you have to tear everything apart to get the 3rd members out (well, at least on the front; you can pull the rear 3rd without doing a rear axle job, but you might as well).

Thanks Beno and Yooper. Just trying to weigh whether or not it's worth it.

What kind of setup are you running?

Yooper, I am currently driving a buddies 88 4runner. I am trying to determine whether to go with the bulletproof FJ motor or the higher power of the FZJ. I've been looking at 91's and 92's that are rigged out and then considering doing a re gear to reclaim power.

of course its worth it... north of $1k. probally 1200 or so.

I am in the process of swapping gears right now. I purchased 5.29 Nitros, master install kits, and knuckle kit from JT and a full set of shims from American Toyota. $1400+ so far. I am pulling the 3rds myself and sending out to a mechanic friend for the gears. Verbally quoted a bro deal at a $100 per. So, $1600+ for me. How is everyone else getting out for so cheap?

I'm pretty sure Kernal is just doing the rear on his,and as for me with both diffs I bought, gears, master installs, knuckle kit, long field sweeps, FZJ rotors and calipers, 100 series front pads, FF rear, rotors, calipers, pads, e-brake shoes, e-brake rebuild parts, bearings, seals, basically everything from the springs down will be new and I am probably in it for nearing $3k or maybe more, really don't want to add it all up, and that doesn't include the tundra wheels and new tires to clear all those big new rotors.

And arbs are still on the wish list for later on down the road.

Wow with it all typed out like that all those cardboard boxes I just threw away make way more sense. Just don't tell the :princess:

Not sure about everyone else, but for gears and the labor I'd say flirting with $1500 is about right, but that is just gears, by the time you add all the "while I'm in there" parts I'm gonna say north of $2k is not unreasonable.

Robbie did mine, CDans, and Mrs. CDans rigs all at once. We bought our gears and install kits through Robbie, paid extra to have the front gears cryo'ed, paid for his gas from Boulder, fed him some sushi, he stayed at my house and used my shop space, all 3rds were removed, and we had complete shims from Toyota.

Came out to about $1400 per rig including Robbie's labor.

Thanks Beno, sounds like a good way to go as long as your mechanic friend doesn't eat to much sushi.

Sounds like a foreign parts exchange student. I need to get me one of those.

It can be expensive. When I looked into regearing my 85 4Runner from 4.10 to 4.56 I opted to just buy two new TRD elockers with factory 4.56 gears. I don't think it cost me much more as I got them for about $850 each and did all the work to install them myself. Of course that's not an option on an 80.

Thanks Eagle, I know it can be expensive. Just getting some info for now.
