I also have the retrosound 2. Love that it looks old school but has all the modern things you'd want. Not cheap though.

This looks narrower than the one posted above...

I reused my original face plate that the dealer used with my circa 1978 Panasonic. I just had to use a jewelers file to square the round corners. Everything is adjustable with the Retro radios. The volume and tuner stems are wired like a phone-jack with a long pig tail that would let you mount the stems in any crazy place you wanted. I even reused my original knobs, even though that wasn't the plan originally. (I didn't know that I had to order separate knobs)

If I had a PB account I'd post a couple pictures, but it looks like emac's only my face plate is a little wider and slips under the dash pads

Edit> just like Jchanunc above.

retrosound 2 in my rig. I went with a plain look. It barely fits, but my hole had the original tabs cut. So, I made a backing plate you can barely see in the picture.

Would you have a picture as to what the dash looked like before you installed the radio? Also, pic of the backing plate?

Where are you guys putting speakers in your 40s?

Here are some old photos. These speakers are cheap Pyle speakers, waterproof. Paid $17/pair through amazon. Spent more money on the amp and subwoofer I built under the driver's seat. Head unit is a $79 pioneer inside the Tuffy center console. You can search my build thread for additional info and photos of the stereo setup.

What about that gap? Is there really one or does it sit flush? My OCD wouldn't allow that.

I suppose there is a gap. I had forgotten that the faceplate overlapped the dash pads slightly. (I'm currently living out of the country and haven't seen my cruiser in about a year). But the gap is tiny and I don't notice it at all. Compared to the giant empty space I had for years with nothing in it, this was a great improvement for me.

I could see how an OCD/perfectionist would be bothered though :) I may trim it in the future to sit better.

Different option: I left my original AM radio in the dash (because I love baseball games in the summer with static and distortion coming out of the single speaker under glove box) and put in a JBL PRV-175 100% sealed marine radio (bluetooth, aux, usb, etc) in the center console (cutout in the flat area between seat belt latches) with an Alpine amp under driver's seat with wakeboard marine speakers on roll bar and a Kicker marine subwoofer in back. The FJ40 is open to the elements from April until November and wanted them to be waterproof.

Ok, now I have more things to spend money on. I just wanted something to fill the hole, now I have 'desires and feelings' for a high tech unit that gives someone a reason to steal it.

Bumping an old thread. What do you have to do to gain access behind the radio hole? The PO had a 2post radio in but it won't come straight out the front opening. It must have been installed from behind. Do the windshield vent tubes disconnect easily from the upper connection?

Just been there myself, the tubes on my truck just slip over the metal tubes at the top and kind of "snap" into place on the side of the heater. Also removed the ash-tray for additional access because of the AC components on the passenger side.

This is an old thread, but maybe someone has some input. I love the old school look AND I really like bluetooth option of the RetroSound Radio. Does it connect easily? I'll check on my dimensions tonight, but I am curious if anyone has tried it on a FJ60. Right now I've got an inop radio from a Rav4.

@Engineer8000 tests/rebuilds OEM head units(and other circuitry), is a electrical engineer. @thecrazygreek does standalone micro Bluetooth radios that occupy a dash knob hole. Maybe one/both of them could chime in with feasibility on this?
