Okay folks, I am about to purchase a radiator, found this Champion 4-row that says it will fit a 68, not a 78... My chassis/body is 68, my engine is 78. Is Amazon just stupid, or is there a difference between the two?

Update: The Champion site says it fits all 58-80 40's. Is it safe to purchase?

I don't have much experience with earlier trucks, but the difference might be in fan proximity to the radiator. Early trucks had the solid-mounted orange 4-blade fans, while the 78 had the nylon fan and clutch. I'm thinking that the 78 cooling fan was closer to the radiator than the earlier trucks. So, radiator thickness in the stock mounting shell might be an issue. Maybe it's an issue with a 4-row radiator. Just a thought.

Edit: I just looked at your Amazon link and I notice that the radiator mounting flange bolts to the rear-side of the stock radiator mounting frame, so any additional thickness would be on the front-side (away from the fan). So my thought above is not correct if the Amazon photo is representative. Perhaps there is an issue with the fit of the radiator into the stock mounting frame. I don't know the differences, but SOR does list several different radiator mounts over the years.

Thanks for the info! I'll be installing a 16" hi-flow electric fan, so I don't think the clearance will matter. I hope that is all there is to the difference though.

@65swb45 may not answer up because he's sick right now, but certainly he'd know if there are significant differences between 68 and 78 radiators and their mounts.

I found a good deal on a 4 core radiator from... I think the name was Radiator Barn. It was a while ago but its held up pretty good on my 78.

I recently bought an OEM radiator as well, and if I remember right, the fitment went back many years with numbers superseded to the new one.

And new OEM comes with correct Toyota cap and that petcock thingy (or extension) to help drain the radiator.

I bought one a while back...:

Solid brass, four rows, includes new cap and new drain pipe (as shown.)

Part number says 1975 and up, but flange pattern and size appears to be a perfect fit for my '73 FJ40. The only difference I noticed was that my original radiator flange, on the cap side, had some 'fingers' punched in the flange to retain the overflow hose on its way downward to the ground. This one doesn't have those, since by '75 they went to the overflow tank.

Just put a new Toyota radiator in a ‘69 with a new FJ60 radiator overflow bottle & cap. (nothing present before)

It’s so satisfying to look at a new radiator!

And don't forget to modify the radiator drain so it doesn't spill on the front cross member and axle when you need to work on the heater or water pump

I just checked Radiator Barn and its been bought by a company called Keystone, the reviews are not great. I wonder what RockAuto radiators are like, I just looked them up and they sell for between $200-270.

They have many options. All are aluminum, you can add elec. fans, shrouds, overflow tanks, aluminum hoses, and polishing service. They have good reviews from what I have seen. 4+ stars on Amazon, Jegs, Google, and Summit. Just the 4 row radiator with no add-on is $270. That's a good deal I spec out a fully loaded one (fan, aluminum shroud, overflow, and hoses) for $584.

4-row may be overkill for a little 2F, but I don't like taking chances when I don't have to.

The Champion site lists the radiator for model year '58 to '80. Could it be really that universal? My FJ45v is a '67 and I'm looking for a good replacement.
