Has anyone ever tried to install rack and pinion steering in a 40? Should be an awesome conversion if possible without a frame redesign.

R&P and solid axles don't work very well together. About the only way it would work is if the rack were mounted on the axle itself.

The more I think of it what difference does a straight axle make? You are only turning the knuckles. Am I missing something here?

If you mount the R&P on the axle would it be possible to turn it with a cable type linkage like a motorboat? I'm thinking zero bump steer!

When the axle twists going over a bump it will have MASSIVE bump steer with R&P steering. R&P steering is used with independent front suspensions where the pivots of the control arms and the pivots of the steering joints "match" so suspension movement doesn't change the steering angle of the wheels. Now if you have the rack attached to the frame of a LC and twist the suspension the wheels move away from the rack and change the steering angle by massive amounts. R&P tie rods are only 12 - 18" long; how will they reach the steering knuckle when the axle can move 12" vertically on a typical FJ40?

R&P steering is used on FJ Cruisers and the 100 and 200 series Land Cruisers. All of those use independent front suspensions. One of the changes when converting those to solid axle is to change to a steering box and toss the steering rack.

I'm thinking with it mounted on the axle it would be more like a full hydraulic rock buggy steering. I don't see yet where the bump steer would be. But maybe with the rack setup it would still return to center?

Just without the long shaft & u joints. maybe you could fabricate a way to put another spinning joint on the pinion end to get it to turn the pinion shaft.

Like what?

I don't really want to step on anyone's toes or start a pi**ing contest so I'm not going into specifics. It's just my opinion about certain things I have seen that I personally would not have done for one reason or another. I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw something and said why.

I'm just asking why man. What benefits do u see from rack n pinion steering? Are you looking to fix some sort of issue you have with how your cruiser steers?

The answer is no... you can look through the other threads of rack n pinion that come up at least once a year

Yes on mud there has been odd ideas here and there ... and some surprisingly worked

There was once a rack and pinion on solid axle... it was a hack ... a dangerous hack

There are plenty of other things to obsess over on our cruisers ... adding rnp should not be one of them lol

:)

Fresh off the Ghetto Fab and hack jobs thread.
