quick question U-joint worn / pinion flange question

hey guys just curious, i was greasing my drive shaft when i noticed the ujoint bearing caps or whatever they are called . where able to spin in there bore
only two of the 4 ,two opposite from each other (see 1st pic) u-joint is tight .what does this mean ?? any ideas ??

it is loose in the bore and can be spun with my finger still feels like it has the rollers and grease in it .joint is still tight.

and also while i was out looking at my parts rig 1973 40 i noticed on the front output of an early t-case and the front diff pinion both had round flanges mated to the small bolt pattern drive shafts whats up here ? didn't round only come on fine spline pinions larger driveshafts ?

My brother had similar issues with his old cj7. PO told him it was eating u joints and needed a cv drive shaft. He replaced the worn out yoke and never had another problem. Good luck!:beer:

I wouldn't be happy with that Jake.

I believe they should be a "light press fit".

So in your shoes I'd fit a new universal joint there. - And if you find some of those cups/caps slide in too easily with the new one, then I'd consider using a mild loctite on them.

U-joint caps are a press fit into the yoke bores. Rotational movement indicates that the bores are worn. Continuing to operate this drive shaft will result in accelerated u-joint wear.

Replace the female part of that slip and stub and call it good.


The round companion flanges were available on coarse spline pinions.

No big deal there.
 
As poser said, round flanges were found on a few coarse spline diffs. My 73 FJ55 had a coarse spline 4.11 third from the factory(at least it sure looked original) and it was a round pattern flange.

If the cap spins in the yoke, the yoke is more than likely done in for. the caps are harder than the yoke and will wear the yoke out rather than wearing the cap down. might be able to knurle it for some press fit and locktite if you HAVE to re-use, but better to find a new(used) one...

Howdt! 2X what Poser and Brett said about the worn yoke. BTDT. Missed a very important trial run a few years ago, cause as I was greasing up my DS on the day before, I found the same thing. Once they are loose, they will get worser faster!! John
 
It could also be an aftermarket NEAPCO U joint. Their caps are undersize and spin in the bores.
