in the middle of axle rebuild. Reused original shim on Nitro Axle rebuild kit. Knuckle was really tight, so I tried the thicker shim that came with the kit. That felt too loose. If I stack the original Toyota shim with the thinnest replacement shim from the Nitro kit, I feel about perfect. Would it be ill advised to stack two shims?

Not ill advised, in fact it's common practice.

Thanks. Now for that f'ing snap ring on the axle to birf. WTF!

Having done several 80 I have never seen any consistency with shims.

Too tight and you will brinell the bearings too loose also a problem. Without a fish scale:rolleyes: I would shim to a firm feel. Also no problem stacking shims.

Dump the snap ring and MarTack the axle and never deal with the snap ring again.

I tried the hose clamp trick from the Jonsey's video. I must not have the right kind of hose clamp as the worm screw contacted the birf first and released the ring before it could get into the spline. Ended up using a zip tie and that worked like a charm.

As for shims, the original shim had a Toyota part number. That said, the axles had obviously been rebuilt at some point as there were signs of the races have previously being hammered out. With the original shim sandwiched with the and thinnest in the Nitro kit, it feel perfect: stiff, smooth and about 10-15lbs of resistance.

Zip tie trick was the only one that worked for me as well. Took a few attempts though. That was the only part during my whole front axle rebuild that I struggled with!
