There is a 1969 FJ40 for sale in the local area, and I am planning to go out this week to check it out in person. As far as I know, it is all original plus a plow, hasn't been used on the road for years (mainly as a plow truck for a small driveway), has some rust towards the rear and the brakes are shot. It has a hard top and all the glass. The owner says it shifts fine and runs alright and it has just over 41K on the clock. Owner wants 1600 OBO.
I was just wondering if this sounded like a reasonable deal given the information I have listed. It has a 3 on the tree manual trans that I know nothing about. I'll search what I can about this, but would like some feedback on it. Any particular things I really need to look for other than the regular "falls off with age" stuff?
I am mainly interested in it for an off road rig, so I am not really worried about getting it ready for the highway.

If it's complete, runs, and isn't a rust bucket it's worth the price.

The "three on the tree" is simply a manual transmission with the shifter located on the steering column. Extra linkages as opposed to direct with a floor mount so usually a little more slop.

Kind of fun to drive but not to wheel with.

Looks sweet! I paid a LOT more than that for my 69. But it was rust free.
I say buy it! You can sell the plow for about what you will have in it.
Hope it wasnt run a lot with no air-cleaner!

FYI that is a pre 68 F135 engine. Low mileage cruiser needed a new engine? I couldn't tell are the parking lights clear? if they are that also ended in 67. Could just be a 67 that wasn't sold until 69. I would check the VIN closely just to be sure. Checked again the bumpers for the windshield look to be the early low style also ended in 67.

That doesnt look so much like a '69. It looks like it has the large window carb and no solenoid, though the solenoid was an option. With the hood bumpers and most importantly, THE TALL THERMOSTAT HOUSING, it looks like an earlier model. Just my thought.

Thanx for the input guys. Yeah, the guy seems to have limited knowledge about these trucks, but told me the more he learns about them, the more he thinks about keeping it. It sounds like it may be an earlier model without him knowing, or he made a mistake listing it. I told him about this site, but not sure if he took the invite seriously. "shrug"
To add, it looks as if I will probably be NOT able to purchase it due to other financial plans. A house outweighs a rig, so.... Plus, I need to find a new job soon before my enlistment is up.

Man...1600 bucks seems so cheap though. Whoever here is interested, have at it.

looks good, price seems reasonable
