I own a 55-series, 1974 with 3-speed floor shift, and the 1.5F motor, it also has a completely custom parking brake disc setup.

They fabricated a bracket to place this caliper on there (photo below).

It seems to have been a decent solution, but the caliper just rattles like crazy on the bracket and the disc is warped to all hell. In the process of putting this on they also seem to have glued a spacer in between the transfer and the bracket. I tried buying new parts for the caliper, but the loose tolerance just destroyed the brake liner and this is also where I noticed the disc is pretty warped. I also don't like the idea of a disc brake down there being vulnerable to grease and dirt, potentially becoming useless if it gets soiled.

So I want to swap over to an OEM drum parking brake setup.
My question what are the main differences between a 40 and 50 series parking brake setup?

I saw this assembly being sold by BTB and was wondering if it would be compatible?

Also... what is the difference between that one and this one?

I've since priced out the entire assembly through diagrams and its getting up there in $, wondering if there's just a cheaper OEM drop-in alternative people usually go with?

Thanks in advance

John

IIRC, 1974 was the transition year that the cable moved from the passenger side to the driver’s side. Does your handle mechanism pass through the passenger side, or take the cable on the driver?

I'll have to take a look over the weekend when I get near it. I may have a picture or two...

I believe it does go through the firewall on the driver side and then under the truck the cable comes up from the passenger side of the transfer case and curves around. It seems like its awkwardly stretched, which leads me to believe it should be routed on the driver side of the transfer case...here's a couple photos of that... cables marked in red

Bonus picture of the bracket that holds the caliper, and the spacer behind it that has been bonded with some sort of adhesive onto the TC.
Added a new seal to this thing and it still is leaking ...

My 12/'74 Pig has the parking brake cable on the passenger side engine bay firewall, enters parking brake on passenger side.
'74 was a very transitional year, I got the 4-speed tranny. I was not aware that any 55 had the parking brake cable on the driver side.
Why does btb have 2 part numbers? I sure as heck don't know, call them.

Thanks for the pictures

I already reached out to them to see whats up.
I’ll have to look to see where the heck the parking cable is coming out of when I get to work on it later this week.

Mine is a 9/74 , so many changes during this period for a lot of components it seems

You will need a right handed actuator lever as well.
