I have an '05 LC and have heard conflicting information on this. When shifting into 4L, is the center diff lock AUTOMATICALLY activated? Or is it simply the transfer case ratio that changes and you still have to lock the diff on your own???

Not sure about an '05, but on my 2000 shifting into 4L does not automatically engage the CDL. You have to push the button and then you'll see the indication light on the dash. I believe the 80's cruiser automatically engage the CDL when you shift to 4L, but not the 100 series cruisers.

My understanding is, on US market UZJ100s:

pre-2000 (unless modified) automatically engage the center diff lock when the transfer case is shifted to low.

2000+ do not automatically engage the center diff lock when the transfer case is shifted to low.

My '04 in 4 low does NOT engage the CDL. You can putz around and turn lock to lock with no issues. Mine you need to push the CDL button to do that.

My 05 lx requires me to push the button to engage the CDL. Going to 4L does not automatically engage the CDL on my rig.

Doing this from 'memory'...but I believe it is correct:

98-99 L/C...LX, CDL IS automatically applied in Low Range.

2000 and up, CDL is selectable (must be manually applied).

"7 pin mod" allows for manual selection in 98-99 model 100 series and also in certain year model 80 series.

2001
have to hit the button to engage

This is one of the things I love most about our LC. The ability to turn in 4lo just like 4hi (CDL unlocked) is awesome. 4lo never gets in the way and is so much more useful compared to previous part time 4wd trucks I've had.

Thanks for the info, did not know pre-2000 100 series automatically engaged. Lucky I ended up getting a 2000!
