Just a small rant!

Auto repair shops are such a scam. I was quoted by one of only two shops here in Boise with r12 to reseal my compressor and recharge with r12. They quoted $500, which is a lot to me but I know r12 is expensive. They turn that into $975 for a new compressor which I obviously said no thanks and got my own. I call them back for the recharge and they want $450 to recharge it!! I am like wtf!? I am also like where is my old r12, all I got to that question was an uhhhhhhh!

I call the other shop, more than $200 cheaper.

A good reminder why I started doing all my own work years ago. And I totally got the vibe from the expensive shop that they take advantage of people not in the know. The way they talked to me and key words they used made it obvious.

So glad I am not at the mercy of these crooks for repairs on my trucks!

Rant over.

Cheers

Hey Ian
Right there with you on that one, just bought a new ish Acura MDX from a buddy for my wife’s ride and he’s not cool Selling a used car to a friend so he gets all new brakes and tires done, brakes alone they charged him $800.00. Then he sells to me and right away I notice the ass end has a grab, tear it all down and all they did was slap some pads in it. Now the caliper is hanging and wrecked everything. Start over and redo the whole thing. Happy note we are now in southern Cali getting some sun this week and just spent the day hiking Joshua Tree, what a blast. Been cruising back roads looking for a 40 to haul home. Dreaming.

Ya, it has been a numbers of years since any shop has done any work on any truck of mine. Even my work trucks which I used to take to a shop cause it was a tax write off, I stopped doing that. Last time they did something for me, wire up a brake controller, the truck almost caught fire! To many times I have been seriously disappointed by shops.

A buddy also got a $800+ quote for brakes, on his FZJ80. We did it ourselves.

Did you drive the MDX down to SoCal? I been busting my arse on the FJ40 project and my truck. Feeling like I need to take a day and go up on the river in my 70.

Cheers

thought so, was just strange to see it with that engine, bay looks cleeeaaan.

Thanks! I like to keep my trucks looking good, all over! ;)

It looks even better with the new M/C. I will post a pic tomorrow.

Cheers

Oh ya so I got a half arse one-man bleed on it this evening and took it for a short drive. I have confirmed the low brake fluid warning light works! It had been unhooked since I got the truck, kind of cool it still works.

We flew in to Palm Springs from Bellingham, friends have a place in Palm Desert. Beautiful area, would love to do some wheeling around here, we have never visited here before. Needed some time away from the grind. Nice motivation to make future plans, want to spend some time in Moab and Mohave next year. never enough time.

Just north of there is Johnson Valley, one of the most awesome off-road areas we have in the country.

Enjoy the trip!

XS Power Batteries terminals. I need low profile with the big battery. I like these, I had XS Power batteries in my 100-series, great batteries!

Good shot of the air cleaner box I POR15'ed and refurbished with all new gaskets in the housing.

I'm guessing it is due to the warm climate. The Canadian Spec 12V BJ70's run two batteries in parallel.

You would be right. The two in parallel was only for the glow system, right?

This truck didn't get a serious test this last winter for cold starting. I think the coldest it was when I started it was maybe 10*. It would start first crank though every time.

I used to have an SD33T Nissan Patrol, 3.3L inline six. It was from Germany and 24v, that I had fired up as low as -30*. So I am fairly familiar with both system but have never seen a Canadian BJ70. I much prefer just a plain old 12v system for the obvious reasons.

Just got my truck back from the shop I had re-charge it with R12. I can say I am happy!

$240 for the R12 re-charge.
$285 for the compressor
$525 all up and it should be good to go for a lot of years. I saved nearly $500 by sourcing the compressor myself, installing it myself and shopping around for the shop to re-charge it with R12. Had I listened to the kooks at the first shop I would be in it a grand.

Tested, no leaks and all is well.

I have a very interesting part in route to me. I just received email confirmation that it has shipped from Japan. Now this part I have tried to purchase before but it has come back NLA and my money has been refunded on it before. Not this time!

I have found that happens even if it is not NLA. NLA sometimes means out of stock!

Partsouq recently has been sending me emails informing me of parts I tried to buy and they refunded my money for, emails stating these items are back in stock. From my pretty long history buying parts from overseas I have learned this can be the case and have been told by the vendors this before. "Check back for that part in a month or two, it is not NLA it is just out of stock."

I would reveal what the part is but I want to see it in my hands first. *Hint* It is oil related and 12-volt.

Nice Cruiser
I ended up using a blusteele solid flywheel kit from AUS in my pz. It was about the same price by the time I source all the hz toyota parts with shipping and less hassle. they didn't include the right TO bearing though but that was easy enough to source

Cool, mine is fine. The link is just for reference. I know Exedy sells a kit but it is more $$$ than working it out OEM it seems. Especially if you went j/y flywheel.

Well I finally got it!!

I have ordered this 2-3x, it would either come back NLA or would process and then come back NLA with a refund on the part. Not a lot of you have a 12v truck but for those who do here is the gauge and part number. 24v form what I have seen is readily available, this 12v assembly took some effort and persistence to get. I got it from Amayama, FYI.

I hope this helps somebody!

I think I may end up keeping this truck for awhile longer.

I have had it for sale since I imported it but haven't really pushed it much. On top of this I need a DD and I like this truck a lot. Plus highest offer I have had on it is $20k and I have a lot more than that in it. If somebody comes along and wants to offer closer to what I have in it I will let it go but I think for now I am not going to push it for sale and will keep it. I was offered an FJ55 with 60,000 original miles in trade as well as a 79 FJ40 and a 2015 Tacoma needing body work. I have passed on them all.

This thread has nearly 10k views now so I am sure people are reading it.

Much of what I have done to this truck wasn't broken items needing to be replaced or repaired. It has been preventative and my process of fixing up the truck. That is just how I roll with my personal trucks and always have.

I have not spent much time on my truck in awhile. I been hammering away on a build for a client instead. I am coming to the end of that though in the next few weeks and I have a pretty big round planned for my truck after the clients build.

I am going to completely strip the interior. I have two very small rust spots to fix in the floor, found during my ownership in the last year. I have a bunch of small parts I been acquiring to put into the interior at the same time. I am going to strip all the factory sound deadening off the floor. I am going to clean every hollow panel inside the truck. I am then going to POR15 it all. After that I may put down a new sound deadening material. I have a replacement rear carpet for the truck to go in at the same time and like I say a bunch of little interior bits. My tail lights are not OEM and one has a very small crack in the lens so I am replacing them with very good 2nd hand OEM tail lights.

I have the gauge pictured above to install as well which will go in at the same time the interior strip happens. I also never installed the new speakers in the dash so they will go in then too.

I still would like to POR15 the rear axle as well.

I also bought a 2nd hand sway bar assembly for the front axle, this truck has not had one since I bought it. I don't think it really needs it but for the sake of having a complete truck I picked it up.

I am thinking about replacing the clutch. I have an inquiry out to a buddy in Aus to locate me a good 2nd hand 1HZ flywheel. I think I am going to swap it out and put in a new clutch. I haven't decided which clutch yet but I am leaning towards an Exedy Safari Tuff, had one in a TD Patrol and loved it. Exedy makes a one piece flywheel but man it is expensive! My clutch is working alright but I do get a little shudder from time to time and once in a great while I get some t/o bearing noise. So I am thinking of tearing into it and pulling the trans. Part of the reason is I am very curious what it looks like in there!

I think I am also going to rebuild the tie rods & drag link soon. I have priced it out and it is fairly reasonable from Toyota. The drag link as an assembly is also only like $50 more than just buying the ends so I will probably just buy the assembly. It is not really needing it but for the "refurbish" process I may just go and rebuild it all.

I have been starting to acquire heater parts as well in prep for a heater install. Grabbed a second hand heater core recently and I got the water valve control wire out of Japan a while back with another order. Most of the rest of it is fairly cheap to buy from Toyota so I may start to acquire more to do the heater install.

Mechanically, the truck really doesn't need anything. It is pretty well sorted at this point. I may pull the glow plugs soon and just give them a peek. If I do I will probably compression test it just for the heck of it.

That is about it. There are a few other things on my mind with the truck but it is nothing it really needs just things I may want to do depending on how much longer I have the Cruiser. One of which is sliders.

Cheers

Hello,

Welcome to the club.

Somehow the time spent on fixes/repairs/you name it (of any kind) has an effect on the sentimental value of a Cruiser for its owner.

Enjoy!
