Why so worried about running at 4K RPM?

I dont get why everyone gets so worked up about running at 4K for a long period of time? I've been redlining it in 1st gear up every pass in Colorado at 28MPH - 35MPH for 10-15 minutes at a time and never an issue over the past 13 years. :confused:

If you have ever been here with the family and fully loaded up with gear you have been there and done that. If your afraid to push the 80 up the pases go to florida for vacation and baby it but it wouldnt be the same experience.
 
Agree that not trying to get everything you can out of 3/4 gears is the key. Last month marked 15 years of towing a 6000lb boat and trailer around frequent western passes, and what I do is manually shift to 2nd, then shove on the gas pedal to keep it over 3000rpms. We have a lot of passes where we are in 1st gear at 3000 rpms appx 25mph. Two weeks ago, we towed up to McCall, Idaho - over 5300 feet high. That included the famous Lewiston Grade which I'd heard about, but the far more difficult White Bird Pass I had not heard about. Last weekend, we did the incredible grade in British Columbia leaving Osoyoos Lake to the east is not for the faint of heart. Cruiser did fine.

I think it is rough on the drivetrain to start up a hill and simply put your foot in it and wait for the forced downshift(s). Those high rpm shifts at large throttle settings with the weight of a trailer are hell on trannies. A little experience tells you the grade ahead is going to require the lower gears, so go to it right away at light throttle, then keep rpms over 3000. Seems to work well. Interesting to see the temps and such confirmed.

We generally travel secondary roads, so often are on hills much steeper than are allowed on the interstate system where semi trucks needs must be accomodated. Go low gears early and keep your foot in it.

Stock truck on stock tires, synthetics throughout. When I tow, I try to fill with Premium before the trip, as I know there will be times I'm at wide open throttle and this helps prevent pre-ignition. My engines are both set at 7 degrees advance.

When I loaded up the cab of the 80 as full as I could and had a 6x12 Uhaul trailer loaded with my heavy garage stuff, I had to drive East on 70 over Vail and Eisenhower. It was 1st gear up both running at redline all the way up. I tried shifting to 2nd but the motor would not pull it in 2nd. No heating problems. Not bad for a motor with 370,000 on it.

Have you replaced the headgasket or is it the original? I'm still impressed and hope my 80's will be be still running strong at that mileage.:)
 
I have owned it sense 207,000 mi and have not replaced the head gasket and a Carfax showed nothing so I can assume it has not been replaced.

I'm glad you mentioned the Whitebird hill. I've pulled a small trailer up it and used the 2nd gear, 3500 RPM tactic--engine did just fine. Fwiw, I think I remember having to do the same without a trailer too. :frown:
 
4th in Low is equivalent to somewhere between 1st and 2nd in High - closer to 2nd, about 1.8 IIRC. Tempting if steep and you want those fabled 5,000 rpms. But need to stop to move back to High when on top, better be a good place to do that...

it's so much the locking/unlocking of the converter that builds heat, but rather it's the constant shifting in and out of OD..........
Disagree. The heat comes from the slippage of the transmission driving "through the fluid" since the torque converter is not locked. That is what heats up the fluid and your tranny. The "seeking" in and out of OD can be hard on the tranny if you allow it excessively, but the heat is what kills the tranmission usually, not the shifting.

.........It's best to lock it in 3rd and let it stay there. Every shift means more heat is added to the fluid. Plus with the engine spinning fast more water is moved through the cooling system which helps cool the motor and also cool the trans through the radiator heat exchanger.

you missed my point - lock it in a lower gear to keep the trans from shifting. Yes a slipping convertor builds heat, and so does shifting. Just what do you think is occurring when the trans goes from one gear to another? SLIPPING.

And you need more power.
 
Did the second gear thing last night and was surprised at being able to keep up with traffic and able to pass some also. Tach doesn't work so I don't know what kind of rpm I was running at

ive never once worried about engine rpms with the 1FZ as long as your truck is in good condition.

the 1FZ will run forever as long as you keep oil in it and pee in the radiator.

:)
 
I went up a hill today at 60 mph in 2nd just to do this. Unloaded. It was not even that steep. At about 60 ft. above sea level. :cheers:

That pretty much sums it up for me. My truck rarely sees 60 going uphill.
