Looks good

I am in the middle of the same types of fixes. Absolute PITA but worth it in the long run. Still trying to figure out the best approach. Currently welding gas-less but thinking about switching over. Yours is a good looking Pig.

Go gas. I started with flux-core, does the job, but splatter was in issue, gave ugly welds. As to the approach....I just pick a rust spot, cut until I find no rust (see 3x rust rule, FJ55 amendment) then use the pieces I cut out as template for patches, and reverse the procedure. Good Luck! Keep at it.

Watching my poor, rust-ridden pig being restored by Scorcher is difficult to describe. The closest thing I can imagine would be like having someone you deeply care about being brought back from the dead. I wish more people could have this experience. If this doesn't put Jason among the premiere restoration craftsmen alive today, then the whole subject is irrelevant. IMHO.

I can't help but think that as fewer and fewer fj55s remain in the wild (as opposed to sitting in a museum), this work will serve as a guide to keep the species alive.

Scorcher 1967: I salute you!

A few more little patches to do underneath the truck (ugh, cold concrete floor, lots of laying down) then on to the big three. Corners, and Floor pan. Caught a cool pic of the floor pan with 1000w light underneath it.
Say "Swiss Cheese!"

Probably tackle that after the little holes are done.

Nip. Tuck. Cut. Weld.

SWEET.

That swiss cheese is giving me nightmares. It reminds me of the creature in Alien, with blood that can eat through three decks of steel. But no, it's just what you get when you run a water line to a rear heater.

Nice shot though.

Jason and Elyse:
Great to see activity and progress (often not one and the same.) Still looking forward to having our two pigs side by side on the return trip to CA, since they share some lineage. Mine has the chassis and drive train from the donor Jason used for roof and corners. And yours will have the interior panels I ended up having to source again once I decided to do my project. Strange things happen after a conversation that starts with "somebody ought to take your parts rig and my parts rig. They could make a heck of a Cruiser." Can't tell you how happy I am that I had maybe 10% of the rust removal/bodywork issues you're dealing with thanks to a lucky buy in AZ. Just hurry up and get it done before I end up having to start in on mine again.
Cheers...

SO great the Frankencruiser has been (or is being?) resurrected! Do you have photos? Is there a thread on it? After seeing my truck under the knife, I would think anyone who is reluctant to tackle almost any kind of rust damage has got to be inspired.

When my truck is at the point where it's ready to go into paint, I'll be back to Severance with my HD camera to shoot the "after" segment of the documentary. (The "before" segment was shot when the body had just come back from the sandblasters and we went around recording all the rust damage. It took a long time.) In between I'm cutting in the work-in-progress photos that Jason has been taking. The final chapter will be shot when the truck is finished.

And of course there's the part where Jason screams "It's alive!"

But... Jim this time I will be going back to CA via the northern route through Wyoming and Salt Lake! Don't go sprucing up Frank anytime soon, but can I convince you to drive down from the mountains to Jason's?

Also, I'm just wondering but does anyone think any other Knights or Knightesses(?) would be interested in meeting in the Fort Collins area to be interviewed for a film about the Iron Pig?

I actually helped carry the sandblasted body into Jason's garage. Think it was when I was over picking up what my wife not-so-fondly dubbed "the Hulk." Or perhaps earlier when I delivered the door panels and the adventure with my Pig resurrection began. Many have asked for a build thread and I have actually begun to cull through many photos trying to put one together. Perhaps soon...
Happy to meet up in Severance/Fort Collins when yours is ready to paint. Wouldn't be hard to convince me to also meet up in Rock Springs when you're on your way home. Maybe at Ted's, one of the great WY steakhouses. One of my best friends lives there and there's a great backway up there from here.

I would meet up to talk about Pigs for your film, sounds like fun!

Is someone planning a Pig Party? I think I can get the blue and white one I did to visit. My old record was 3 running pigs at my house at one time....might have to break that record!

some underneath patches....

I made the patch for it, but will wait until tomorrow to weld it in...wet POR-15 does not take well to heat...
Have to make a matching one for the other side....then....just maybe....the little holes are all done....and the corners will be next....

Thanks man, would love to meet you.

Awesome - PIG PARTY at Jason's !

Time/day: TBD

Maybe nearby, at Bruce's in Severance. Jason can explain...but worth the trip for cold beer and "delicacies."
