Just so I have seconded this, we tried recrimping the tops on my old 80 exhaust stud nuts also, they're not reusable and the threads are actually a little tight to start with when new, sort of a built-in locking/intentional crossthread feature.

If I'm remembering correctly they have 2 (I think) little knubs near the top of the nuts that provide part of the interference fit. When you re-use the nuts the top portion of the nuts don't provide enough tension to drive the nubs with enough force into the threads of the studs because they've been expanded once. Sometimes there is enough tension left to work OK. If you tap them you remove these nubs and probably completely lose the interference fit.

I got a good amount accomplished today. I'll post some pix later. I just loaded win7 on my LT the other day and havent moved my photos and software over yet.

I got the heater hoses done. Future swappers...do this while the motor is out. Its a back breaker

Hooked the transmission coolant hardlines up to the trans and secured them to the motor with the factory hardware.

Got the Tundra throttle cable mounted.

Ran the vacuum line to the brake booster.

The took the rest of the day to work on the shift linkage for the t-case and
trans. Its was a muther ***er !!!

I just finished it and bolted up both shifters ! Im tired as he11. I've been
out there since 6:15am

Jack D and Jim B here I come !

The tundra throttle cable has a different flange on it.
I hogged out the hole about 1/8" inward on the larger tundra flange to match the FJ flange pattern. I took the gasket off and used that as well.

DSC08902.jpg

I swapped the A343 cruiser pan back onto the hybrid transmission because the dipstick comes out on the driver side thereby missing the driveshaft on the pass side. I wanted to use the tundra pan because it was about an 1-1/2" deeper. No biggy

Whoever undercoated the LX450 this thing came out loaded up on it. This pic was the third scrape

DSC08904.jpg

I had to do some pursuding of the dipstick to get work in this location. I re-purposed this bracket to hold the tube

DSC08906.jpg

DSC08907.jpg

Some of the hardline heater hoses from the FJ. This was after a wire wheel took off the corrosion.

DSC08910.jpg

Here is one part of what guys call the PHH assy. The damn hose was melted either mechanically or chemically.

Before

DSC08912.jpg

I used a wire wheel on the dewalt to clean these up.

After

DSC08913.jpg

I was able to do this entire heater hose assy with one of the tundra heater hoses. I wish I had more of the pinch clamps. They look oem and clean.

DSC08917.jpg

I tried to keep everything clean but these worm drive clamps dont match too well. Its only asthetic so fawk it

DSC08918.jpg

The one piece I added into the mix was cut from the FJ Polished stainless 90deg elbow

DSC08921.jpg

I cant get enough of this view. You can see the brake booster vaccum source hooked up in this view

DSC08922.jpg

This is the ghetto-tastic hole I cut for clearance over the t-case shifter motor

DSC08926.jpg

Ill post more of this when its complete just to show that its not quite as hacked up as it looks

DSC08930.jpg

I didnt take a whole lot of photos of the shifter setup but here is what the arm ended up looking like off the shift lever in the cab

DSC08932.jpg

To say I had spacial contraints would be an unerstatment. The tcase shifter was about 5" too far forward to mount in the holes.

DSC08937.jpg

And since there were no holes in the top of the trans/tcase I had to make this adapter plate. It bolts to the tcase shifter mount thats 5" forward and the tabs wrap around behind the tcase

DSC08935.jpg

I drilled and tapped the holes for the stock FJ tcase shifter

DSC08938.jpg

Here is the parting shot mounted. I notched the front of the trans tunnel early on. It is not needed at all. There is 2" of clearance there. Oh well

DSC08940.jpg

Hope to get alot more done tomorrow

:wrench:

Didnt get as much done yesterday as I hoped, but whats new right.
I always say just shoot for for the moon and hope to hit the top of the fence ;p

You guys will have to pardon me if alot of this is self explanitory or 2nd nature to you. I like writing this as much as I like reading other peoples writeups. I kinda get off on car part photos....I know kinda sick huh. Im going to list as many steps as I remember. Who knows, it may help someone in the future.

Started a little wiring. Not sure what the deal was here but obviously the stock wiring was a little taxed. One of the small +12v wires

DSC08943.jpg

The holder was a little melted as well

DSC08944.jpg

This connector feeds power to the FJ

DSC08950.jpg

The pigtail goes into here

DSC08946.jpg

and gets traced back to here

DSC08947.jpg

DSC08949.jpg

It is connector EB1

DSC08952.jpg

More wiring later

:wrench:

Heres some more of the floor patch photos. Again, im sure second nature to 99.9% of the folks on here but Im a car part picture whore so here ya go

Start with cardboard on one side.

DSC08958.jpg

Then trace the other side and cut

DSC08960.jpg

Use the cardboard for a template and viola

DSC08961.jpg

The part after additional trimming

DSC08962.jpg

DSC08963.jpg

The extremely hideous but fully functional result (there were a few pin holes after this photo that I went and tacked in.

DSC08966.jpg

Wire brush the weld and Seal that bitch in with some black urethane to make it water proof. Shoot some undercoating on the underside.

DSC08972.jpg

DSC08967.jpg

Heres the tundra ECU mounted with the factory FJ brackets. The tundra wire harness fits perfect.

DSC08968.jpg

Spagetti for dinner anyone ?

DSC08969.jpg

The mechanical stuff I get (being an engineer and the 'Dad who fixes everyone else's car' etc)

The wiring - you are living proof of wizardry and magic because that stuff - uugghhh - just don't get it at all.

Keep posting all the pics (you whore lol).

A great write up of an amazing project.

(Makes my 18 month turbo project seem a slow pile of shyte)

that appears to be the connectors for your fusible link. i suggest you order a new one if there are melted wires near by. mine went bad and i could not get it to work until i replaced it.

Makes my 8 year build of my 4runner in post #1 feel like it tokk most of a decade...oh wait..it did

Im feelin pretty good about the progress

Ive never seen it done this way before but I belive the box is simply a protective case just to cover the posts where the fusable link wire from the positive battery terminal connects to the actual wire that carrys the current downstream.

yes that's right. i meant get a new fusible link. sorry if that was not clear.

No you were good. And yea hundred percent on the replacment. I wish there was a way to clean it up a bit by using a regular mini atc holder or something

If you're using the FJ80 wiring, that link might not support the amps the tundra alternator is putting out. The FJ puts out 80 amps (I think?) and the Tundra is 130 amps. If you're feeling sassy, you could go out and try to procure a 150 amp alternator from a 2003ish sequoia, check it on car-part.com. For you it would be a straight across swap for some more juice.

Go ahead and upgrade that wiring while you're at it. There is a thread in the 80 section about doing the swap for the alternator. Search on sequoia alternator and that will pull up a thread by photoman, this has some stuff in there you might find interesting.

I ordered a 150amp sequoia alternator two weeks ago but it has yet to show up. The alternator on this tundra is only 80amp.
Im looking into alternate fuse methods right now.

Does anyone know what the 1.25B fuse is or 2.0L or .03P ? I mean in amperage ?

Worked on the rig a little bit this morning. Got the battery harness put back together. Ran new fusable link wire and made sure to keep it clear of objects around it. As it turns out the one of the PO's did a little hack job on the wiring. Several of the power wires were cut off from thier original source and tied together.

I supplied power to the box and used the posts for power to the links at each of the lines. A little different than the way it came out of the box.

DSC08980.jpg

A few links coming off for power

DSC08989.jpg

I removed some of the unecessary wiring from the harness by the fuse box. Tightened everything up and ziptied everything out of the way. This is the resting place of the link holder.

DSC08991.jpg

I wanted to keep everything clean and tite. The battery terminals have minimum clutter. I have power disttibution right off the back of the battery tray. Everything is isolated with e-tape, rubber hose or wire loom. Ziptied or cable strapped out of the way of loose/vibrating or moving objects, and as a line of defence, there are fuses.

DSC08993.jpg

Minimum clutter

DSC08996.jpg

Oddly enough this photo makes the wiring look like an awful mess compared to seeing it in person.

DSC08997.jpg

I may have mentioned this in one or more of my previous posts, but being ADD I tend to overthink everything. I get hung up on things like asthetics during construction of my projects and that almost always results in project delays while im trying to decide what to do. Im pleased that i've been able to work thru those issues this time by keeping motivated with this thread and the comments from you guys.

I got some of the ECU wiring done today. I made a list of what wires went where. Once the bugs are worked out, I may post a list.

:D ADD+OCD=Sick Builds. When all is said and done, just like some of our builds, people will still look at you and ask "..But why?", the same thing they ask of all of us who do this sort of thing.

Need some more motivation, take a look at the other Shane's (AATLAS) build of his 80, he is doing the same as I have done with all the interior restoration and cleaning, take some tips from our threads and it'll be even better as it'll be a complete package deal.

This hobby is both a passion and a sickness, and IH8MUD is the therapy session we use as step two of the program, step one of course always being garage time. :D

Get it done, I want to see pics and a vid of it running.

I needed to extend some wires and I was hellbent on using the same colors to make it easy to troubleshoot in the future if necessary.

Searching for the needle in the haystack so to speak. The colors start to blur after a while.

DSC09002.jpg.tmp.jpg

Found it

DSC09005.jpg

Power leads from EB-1. I'll write a short novel later

DSC09009.jpg

Right about here I was qustioning when the hell things were going to come to an end. My back hurts like hell.

Taken some notes for the future 2UZ swappers of america !

Just wait until you lay down in bed tonight and try to get up for that mid-night piss and your back freezes up and your shoulders go "POP". :flipoff2:

FWIW, with the splicing, lately I have gone as far as after soldering the junctions, coat them in a thin layer of di-electric, then, use a thinner heat shrink just beyond the point, then a larger size over all of that.

I see you're electric taping the lines, you're using the scuff tube too I figure?

Lastly, FWIW, now I really want an '80 after yesterday..https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-...mper-blacked-out-factory-rims-fremont-ca.html

If you keep up these posts and the Wife sees them I'll be able to sneak one into the garage that much easier! :grinpimp:

I broke my back when I was younger so now everytime I move I hear a pop :frown: if only we knew then what we know now

Your pretty hard core doing that much on soldier joints.
I havent used di-elec on these. But I have used two layers of heat shrink tube on some of the wires where I join multiple wires into one. A large tube on the bundle of wires and one smaller piece under that.

I usually do a really loose spiral lap joint over the wires just to hold them in place. I use flex loom or snorkle tube if thats what you mean by scuff tube.

If you have a computer you share with the wife, make a screen saver with a bunch of photos of 80's ;)

That is a brilliant idea! I keep telling the wife that I want an 80 or an LX450 and she just tells me to sell my 40.
