The vin numbers all match but I noticed today that my FJ40 is a year off. The ID in the door says production Oct 1971 but my CA registration says 1972 as does the title. Anyone know if this is a pain to change or a big deal... or does it mean it was sold originally in 1972? Thanks for any info in advance!

There is nothing wrong with the car title. Just about every car sold is built up to a year before it is sold. Other manufactures just don't always show their born on date on the vin plates.

welcome to Mud ... its registered correctly i.e. an Oct/71 build date is a 72 ... mine's a Nov/77 build registered as a 78 and it has all the 78 stuff (as far as I can tell) ...

2015 model of many vehicles have been sold for months. Its rare when the model doesn't prior to January. 75/79 were rare in that didn't start in the previous year but ended months before end of the year. Many 74 and 78 longer than normal. 75 and 79 shorter. As for having a production not on every vehicle, as far as I know every sold new in the US has that going back to 69. The A pillar plate was a North American models and not on every LC.

Back in the day Toyotas did not go by year model, they went by production date/frame number, consequently USA dealers could have the DMV register them as the year model they were sold in. After being manufactured, Toyotas could sit on the dock in Japan for 2-3 months, spend another month getting to the USA, spend another 2-3 months at the port, then another 3-4 months in the Dealerships back yard- - - all of a sudden, it's a year later.

My 1969 is titled as a1970. I think my registration says "first titled in 1970," not 1970 model.

It's really no different than the way things are done today. You can buy a 2015 vehicle in 2014. Same as buying a 1972 fj40 in 1971, it's obviously built in 1971, as the 2015 model year you can buy today was built in 2014.

I have a registered 1978 that was built late in 1977 but like everyone else says has all the 78 parts.
