Preventing rust

I'm glad this thread popped up because after several searches and hours of online reading I settled on Fluid Film, I bought 4 cans to start treating the inner panels, doors and rockers before putting the interior panels back on. I had only done the rear passenger quarter panel and stopped to tackle the fuel filler grommet so it's sealed off better. Now I am thinking AMSOIL MPHD and linseed oil is what I need to order.

The best product I have used is Penetrol. It positively seals the metal.

I like Fluid film. I was worried about the stink so I rolled my 60 on its side and let it sit for a few days. This allowed the gearbox to leak, filling the the cruiser with a tantalizing 90 weight aroma.
haha... you funny guy. Fluid film probably smells like heaven compared to that s***.

I have my truck professionally sprayed once a year in the fall, and then use spray cans to add protection as needed throughout the year.

Hi there! I’ve just started researching getting my truck professionally sprayed. I have surface rust from this winter. I had the underside coated with a 3M rust prevention spray at a local mechanic last fall, but it’s just about all gone from the frame.

Anyone know a good service provider in the Massachusetts / New Hampshire area? I would like to get the surface rust all cleaned up, and the metal treated.

I could try to tackle this myself... I have a few cans of POR15... but I was saving that for the new OPOR sliders I should be receiving this Tuesday. Plus I have a few other projects I’m more interested in completing (like finally adding the light bars I bought last year).

Also just realized this post was in the 60-series forum. I have a 100-series, but rust is rust regardless of what truck it is on. :)

Cosmoline - Been around for Looooooong time for a reason. Mil grade. Dries hard wax-like with no odor. Toyota used to send bare blocks and Cast Iron pieces coated in the stuff.

Woah! I need to get some of this! Thanks for the link.

Fluid film is great if you are into the smell of wet sheep

I used CRC Soft Seal to fill the inside of my gutters (from inside the car - under the roof sheeting) and think it would be perfect for the rest of the body / doors / chassis etc.
It sprays on and dries to a hard waxy coating - you can build up coats to easily get it 5mm thick... doesn’t smell for long either (maybe a week)

I don't get any smell from fluidfilm. I sprayed in the doors, all in the rear quarters, under the rear seat, etc. It smells for a few days then the smell is gone. I like fluidfilm so much I bought the undercoating gun, spray a light coat inside the frame and engine bay every fall. At this point I've got a thick coating mixed with dirt, can scratch it with your fingernail. Its been 6+ years now.

I don't think fluidfilm is something reasonable to stop rust. What I found is that it will aggressively wick into thick rust and sort of tear it apart so you can press your fingers through it. If you have bad rust you need to cut it out and replace the metal.

I get my cars sprayed either every year or second year. I have a krown dealer in our town. It's not costly to spray a vehicle. Krown is a great corrosion protector. I use the 73 in spray cans for touch up.

It bubbles when it goes on and seems really good. My wife has an excursion with paint that has come off around the wheel well. It started to rust so I sprayed it with this and the rust stopped and isn't spreading. And it doesn't just rinse off driving on wet roads.

POR -15 is not good. Rust will form under it and you won't know till its too bad.

Gentlemen, Krown is What works and It’s non smelly. Cost is $140 for entire SUV with Doors/panels/misc and $80 just to under spray. That is a Tad over $200 per year to Keep your Cruiser cruising along. After 10 years and about $2500ish bucks, Your Vehicle will still be Intact. Worth every penny in my book. Oh and Darn good Wax (Ceramic) for the shiny candy coated Exterior side.
It’s either this or don’t drive your cruiser. That’s not a option since It’s a Addicting Thing to drive the best vehicle on the road.

I know this thread is old but for the people who are concerned about smell try Rust Check (red cans for penetration) it has a almost strawberry smell. I use it all the time. but beware it will destroy rubber seal (expand them). I also find it sticks better than Krown.
