Poking around some more... Anybody interested in doing this, I ran another search on eBay using the search terms "Land Cruiser pantalla" and I can see a few more listings for these bad boys, most all under $200 USD (plus shipping).

Can you change these from Celcius to Fahrenheit?

Can you change these from Celcius to Fahrenheit?

That's a great question. I have no idea myself. Not sure if @BukkakeAisu knows and/or can test on his....?

For me, I'm ok if it does not, I still think its cool/more useful than the GX470 one, even if its stuck in C.

I also have seen on the LX470 where they have found a way to swap between C and F on some of their climate control displays similar to this. I was going to try the same thing. Converting C to F (and vice versa) is such a simple equation that it would be super duper easy to program into the things....I just can't imagine, in ~2003, with these types of electronics and advancements, that Toyota would *not* program in a way to do so. I guess maybe if they knew that specific module was absolutely only going to be destined for C markets...but still then again, as a DevOps guy, there's no way I'm not just putting that tiny bit of code in anyway...

Anyway, I figure when I get mine, I'll def do some fiddling around and give it a try using the steps the LX folks have found and whatever else I can come up with. I'll def report back.

I'll mess with it and see if there is a way. As 'merican as I am, I really wish the US would finally properly switch to metric and Celsius. Drives me bonkers when I have to convert back.

Another pic with my Android head unit start up screen.

That's pretty sweet looking!
Does your factory dimmer switch control the brightness of the nav?

I haven't even noticed...will check on that.

Did you have a nav or non nav GX before the Tesla screen? Any pictures during the day? Looks great!

Also following for how theferg's retro fit goes.

Cheers,

Non-nav (Prado) before the Tesla screen. I'll try to take some pics today. As far as android for NAV goes, it's great always having updated info and traffic factored in. Here in Japan, Yahoo! Navi seems to be the best app as it is based on Google maps but with a ton more local info on it and traffic. (Google maps kept trying to send me the wrong way down 1-way streets or down roads too narrow for anything other than a scooter)

As promised: Factory dimmer doesn't dim the NAV screen or buttons but the Nav does have it's own adjustable and auto dimming settings.

More notes: Browser it comes with sucks, I installed Chrome and it's great. Next job up is cleaning up those cracks in my dash. Will pull the unit out and try to connect the steering wheel audio controls to it. (my Prado didn't come with them so I added them with the Lexus airbag an Alphard steering wheel...gotta love Toyota interchangeability)

So I had updated my build thread, but not this one... I received my pantalla unit and it looks great. However, the trim pieces I ordered have been delayed several times--still waiting for them but should be this week or next at the latest. When I got the new display, I went out to disassemble my dash and just test plugging the thing in, but my wood side trim pieces had been rigged back on with double sticky tape and such behind it by the PO and the damn things were for sure going to just break into pieces so I ordered up new ones and decided to wait for them to show up before i bust the old ones off. They made it on the same shipment as the other stuff I'm waiting for.

However, I am stuck at home anyway for the next week or so for work so I may just go for it and rip the old stuff off anyway and plug the thing in...the suspense has been killing me. I had checked the order a few times a day for 3 weeks until it all finally arrived and then shipped, and then I have been checking tracking on it every day for another week.... LOL

Also, if anybody knows a way to get around these guys NOT shipping to the US, here is a flipping cheap pantalla unit from Spain:

Pantalla multifuncion TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 3.0 Turbodiesel 2005 8329060261 711810 | eBay

BTW, I messaged them to verify if they could ship to US and they replied that they could not. I even asked them really nicely in Spanish. :( LOL

Could perhaps get it shipped if somebody has a friend or family member in EU or if anybody knows a freight forwarder from Spain that could do it...

Top cover and under dash. You can see the 3 clips on the cover and the 3 spots on the dash underside where it will clip right into existing clip-holes to the rear (vehicle rear) of the speaker.

Looks like the only issue with this swap is units, and it looks like it might be able to switch.

This is 100% a go for me. I dont think I have time to cut today, but sooooooooon.

Assembled. Notice the face on these is black. I think would match the black after-market non-nav stuff real nice, as well as the Tesla screens. Not sure if its available in the silver/whatever color that the GX has. I'll try to figure that out when I get a chance, but I've only ever seen the black color so far. I plan to convert to non-nav all-black so I wanted the black anyway.

All buttoned up.

1- as soon as you pull it all and look under the dash, you can clearly see the cut line. Go slow and use a steady hand and it'll all work out.
2- It does not fit with the factory middle dash speaker. The speaker had to be removed.
3- The field monitor top cover overlaps the dash middle speaker grill cover about 1/4". It fits well enough I wont be touching it, but one could trim one or the other and get them to fit perfectly.
4- still working on figuring out the settings

The cut :censor:

Hitting the speaker behind:

Looking down into the dash speaker hole, speaker removed, you can see how far it extends into this space. A shallower/smaller speaker could possibly work here:

Done!

Its been a fun project. I love doing these kinds of fun new mods. I was pretty confident it was gonna be doable based on other 120 conversions and the fact that the Prado side trims are all the same and the Tesla screens fit all the same. I'm so glad it worked out though since I cut my dash. :p Of course it's a cracked dash that never got replaced....

A better look at the display:
