Any relatively easy way to get power windows into a 78 series Troopy?

Reason being I'd like to put some good speakers in the doors eventually, and I'd like to keep them above the high water mark when it gets flooded, so as high as possible in the doors, like where the manual window winder handle is.

It would be useful for me if I could get rid of the manual winder handle and put power windows in instead.

Thanks,
Simon

Thanks Hulsty.

Yes, it seems that there are power windows in quite a few 70 series models/years.

Next step is to track some down at a wreckers, and see if they fit a year 2000 78 series door (assuming the ones I find are from a different year and/or model), and if they are a simple bolt in replacement for a manual winding 78 series door, or if there needs to be mods done to the door internals.

Thanks,
Simon

if you're gonna fit the original toyota setup use relays in between the switches and the motors. the original setup (from the older models at least) has all the current going through the switches and it burns out the contacts pretty quick

79 series has option of power windows in middle east. not sure if other places get them too. should be a direct bolt in unless I'm missing something....

Apparently the power windows models of the troopy, and I assume the other 70 series models, do not have the quarter window/vent in the front doors, so are a little different to the doors/windows in my troopy.

This might be to lessen the resistance against the window winding up and down, as it eliminates the parrallel channels that the glass slides up and down in, making it easier for the window to slide up/down compared to the stiff action in some of the manual winding 70 series that I have experience.

So, it might not be a straight bolt in swap, it sounds like it might require a whole new door to suit the power windows.

Have to find some at a wreckers and see how different the door frame is to mine.

Thanks.

You're looking for a 79 series RV troopy at a wrecker. If you can't find anything, call Smartparts in Ballarat (Victoria), although shipping will be expensive I know they have 2-3 sets.

The cab chassis windows wont fit, the door is slightly different i'm pretty sure (although may be wrong?)

You'll need the door skins as well.

If all you want to do is put the speakers up high, consider going to consoles.com.au <-- these guys are in sydney and asking them to come up with a solution to mount the speakers in the COPIOUS amounts of headroom a troopy has? Brett at consoles.com.au is a freaking GENIUS.

Thanks Entaran.

That would be a 78 series RV troopy I think, isn't the 79 series the cab/chassis model?

I assume that I will need the whole door, due to the lack of quarter window/vent in the power window models, unlike my manual winding doors which do have the quarter window/vent.

Not as much headroom in my troopy though, since the roof was chopped off for the high roof camper conversion, there is a lower wooden panel above the cabin now, so I can't fit the speakers up there.

Will try your wrecker recommendation, as there isn't many options for wreckers that would have troopy parts here in Canberra.

One of our work '75s was in a fairly severe accident and we bought some 2nd hand doors - I suspect they were off an LJ or whatever as there was a big 'turbo' decal on the door. They had electric windows - no quarter light. I have looked long and hard and there 'seems' to be no difference to the door size with my 78... but I have not tried it so cannot say 100%. But maybe worth a look,
Gil

If you can't get them from smartparts... try toyhatsu in melbourne. They are gods of 70 series parts.

Also yeah, it's a 78. I hit the wrong button on the keyboard. :)

And sorry, didn't notice the camper conversion. I'd still go for a drive to consoles.com.au in sydney next time you're up that way and see what they say. They really are the gods of their trade.

Heavy duty 70 series models have the quarter window vents and electric windows, the whole door wont fit through as the window frame shape is different on models (corner at top of windscreen not curved) with a fold down windscreen. Hardtop/fixed roof models should have the same window frame shape as yours.

Ie Gibs import 70 (i think power windows too), though no quarter window vents, not sure about AUS delivered HD shorties.

a Light duty 70 series (Bundy) has the curved window frame and electric windows, the whole lot might fit a 78 troopy. This one has a curved frame, vents and elec windows.

i had a look on carsales.com.au at the rv 78 troopys and rv 79 utes, the rv's all come with electric windows standard but dont have the little quarter window in the door
any lc with a front window that has hinges like the 75 utes and 73 middys if you look were there top corner of the door is (were the front window meets the roof corners ) its pointy as said above look at troopys, shortys ,79 utes and there curved im looking at doing the same mission to my 79 std ute ill probly use the whole insides full length window runners and rubbers and glass out of a old wrecked swb from the wreckers any luck i might get velour door trims

Simon I saw your fascinating old thread about swapping out the manual windows on your troopy for electric ones . I want to do the very opposite at least for drivers side on a new troopy based in Perth W.A. Why ? Because when open on the corrugations the bigger curvy electric window rattles and even more so on African roads where ( vaccine dependent ) I intend to gallivant soon . I should have specified manual when ordering . The lovely triangular quarter glass could be opened and a breeze directred if you ( or more particularly “she” ) didn’t want a/c on or too much dust . And if you did open the bigger window it didn’t rattle and didn’t have electric gizmos to go wrong . OK, maybe a bit daft of me , and clearly a small problem in the whole scheme of things . I’d be very interested in what your research revealed that might help me in doing the very opposite . I’ve got speaker on door , but mounted on a Departmet of the Interior door pod so I’m hoping it doesn’t mess up the manual winding mechanism. Also hoping door on new troopy compatible with wind up mechanism from door of an older model wreck because new components from dealer just prohibitively expensive . Enough , before I bore you to distraction with my droning on . You get the picture . Any advice very welcome . And like me if you never chuck out old bits of boats motorbikes or cars , well then you got a buyer !!!!!

Just buy all the manual bits? Or find a used door with manual window?
The parts per door are $1,600+ so no thank you to that .Not even sure you could retro bolt on , weld in the quarter vent into the new door . Nor am I sure how easy it is to source a pair of usable troopy or other 70:series land cruiser doors or whether they are compatible . There was a lot of speculation in the original thread back In 09 about compatibility and I remain interested in what transpired .

I would be willing to bet that any front door from a 76, 78, 79 would work. There’s got to be manual windows without the 1/4 window, unless all Aussie 70 series only came with the 1/4 window. I know the 85-87 Canadian BJ70 came with out the 1/4 window

Noted , thanks . I’d actually prefer the 1/4 window if I could get one fitted or just get the door from a wrecker .

We installed power windows from a 2014 HZJ76 into my 79 series that had vent windows. Needed the metal channel at the bottom(shorter on vent window truck) of the window. 76 did not have quarter windows.

Power regulator bolted up no problem....holes were on the door of my truck. I think the doors on my Troopy had the same bolts as the 09 LC79's doors.

76 windows for sure won't fit on a Troopy....different(at the rear). 78 or 79 interchange from what I recall when we did new glass in my Troopy IF they have the same vent windows....or don't.
