I’ve searched a little here and there trying to find a good upgrade for a ’95 cruiser power steering pump without success. The problem I’m experiencing is when I’m in a difficult rock garden or making a significant climb where I steer right and left while the tires are slowly spinning looking for the necessary traction to make the climb, both my reservoir and high pressure hose (at the reservoir connection) pukes fluid. I’ve double clamped the high-pressure hose and that reduced the amount of fluid coming from there but the reservoir is still a major problem. I will go with a Howe reservoir and a cooler in the near future but also wanted to go with an upgraded pump to increase flow more so than pressure. I called Saginaw and they said they had a pump that fit cruisers but couldn’t tell me if their particular pump fit the 80 series. Looking on their site I don’t think their pump is designed for the 80 series. Does anyone here know the answer to the Saginaw question? Is anyone running a modified or upgraded pump on their 80 series Cruiser?

I haven't heard of one and know plenty of people who wheel the way you described witha stock pump and no issues.

I had issues with mine also, more of a rebuild issue because it was leaking out the back. I did look at some alternatives but went with another rebuilt Toyota one.

However I wouldn't see a problem creating a bracket to hold just about anything. If you do retrofit something please post the results.

it's more than a bracket to fit on a 95. the p/s pump is gear driven not pulley driven.

The gear driven power steering pump is an odd ball, I have no seen such in any other cars ortrucks much less aftermarket parts, the pump has very specific mounting so you cannot just find something close and hobble something together to make it work, it has to be very specific,

saganaw pumps are going to be belt driven, you could find a spot for it, fab a bracket source a belt and pulley arrangement and graft it on,

Anybody got a good flow diagram and description of the workings of the stock power steering pump? Maybe its valving and flow can be tweaked?

Trying to understand which hose you are talking about. There should be no high pressure hose at the reservoir connection. Also, high pressure hose is crimped, not clamped. Do you have any pics?

both connections to the reservoir are low pressure, one 3/8" low pressure return, and one large suction line to the pump, there is only one high pressure line it runs from the pump to the steering box, the rest, (to the cooler and back to the reservoir) are low pressure,

my bad, forgot to read the sig line

I am in the process of mounting a aftermarket pump on the ShortBus. So far it looks like it is going to replace the idler tensioner pully on the AC belt. I need a better steering system and a brand new Toyota pump laster 2 years. Plus when I go to full hydro steering, the aftermarket pumps designed for that system is better.

Raven, I check the motor we have on the stand here as well as the manual. The pump can be removed and the oil pump will still run. The oil pump is driven from the crank, then the drive gear for the power steering pump, is driven from the oil pump.

oops,

you are correct I got that backwards, that makes it much easier,

I'll edit above

I am just pulling this out of left field... but the power steering pumps on the isuzu 4bd/6bd diesel engines in the older npr/nqr box trucks mount similar to the landcruiser pumps and are gear driven off of the crank. I suspect that they would have substantially more volume and you may be able to adapt to the stock mounting and drive gear.
