This came out of my HJ60. I cleaned it all and painted it, but there is one area that I'm not sure about. See attached picture. There is a section of the tube that is narrow, presumably from rust (this was under the hose clamp).

What are the MUD community thoughts on putting this back in the truck? Yay or Nay? Is that narrowed section just waiting to fail? It feels pretty solid when I try to bend the pipe, but I don't want to have to remove this once it's installed.

Thanks for any thoughts/opinions.

Pretty sure this is the high pressure line. What's the consensus on replacement? Has anyone bent new lines, and connected to the soft lines with a compression fitting? If you left a couple inches of hard line attached to the soft hoses you could flare those ends.
Or replace with new soft line the whole way?
I'll have to do some research....

Sorry man thought it was the return line is it the as fj60 or like a 62 or something else because its an hj60?

This is not the high pressure. It’s a cooling loop on the low pressure side of the box. You can omit it and replace it with a trans cooler.

Now I'm confused. From partsouq, it says this is the high pressure line.

Ok I just checked the truck. On one side it connects to the power steering pump on the engine, the other end to the power steering box on the frame. Must be high pressure, no?

I missed that this was on a diesel. The same looking lines are run on my gas 60, but as low pressure.

In your case it looks like one is the pressure line and the other is the low/return.

I think you should try what you’re suggesting, splice a piece in, either compression fittings or with flaring tool and brake hardware.

IF you need options, this is what I did on my diesel swap.

The SS braided hose is dam tough allows options with a cooler. I used the rubber line for the return with push lock fittings.

My set up has been in place for 10 years with no issues.

I'll take any and all suggestions. Thanks. Can you elaborate on the fittings for the stainless line? Did you reuse the existing somehow, or are they new? How are they attached? Also, what diameter line did you use? I assume it needs to be close to the original to maintain good oil flow.

You can buy the SS line and fittings on line at places like Summit, Earl's Supply, etc. The SS line is sized in an odd way, but look for #4. The only hard part is getting the adapters for the steering box. You need AN (SS hose fittings I used) to Metric to AN on steering box.

You can also go to a hose supply shop[ and they can make the hoses for you and likely have the fittings.

I bought all my parts at Earl's Supply, including the cooler. I don't recall the brand.

About $140 total at the time.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I'll figure out what I can find locally, and post up what I come up with.

Local Bumper to Bumper rebuilds the hydraulic lines, whether it be steering or whatever.
Try local auto parts store and they should be able to rebuild it on their location. Obviously
stainless flex hose would be a nice upgrade, but you could also see if they can bend and replace the hard line
with stock steel line

I literally just put that power steering hose on my truck 20 minutes ago.
Ordered it from Rock auto for like $26.00 or something and put it in. Less than $30 for peace of mind might be the way to go especially if you are in a spot to do it quick and easy now rather than dirty and difficult later.
I had to Remove the nuts on the front body mounts and jack up the front like half an inch on both sides to fit the hose ends under the radiator.
Still other cheap options left.

I have done this and it does not last. Kept on popping the hose off where I had flared it regardless of how many hose clamps got used. Rubber lines are fine for the return hose. No problem.

Are you sure it's the same hose? Mine is an '87 HJ60.

Quite positive, buuutt. Your pressure line looks the exact same as mine with the exception of the fitting on the pump. Yours appears to have a fitting similar or same as that on the fuel filter. My replacement and OEM hose has the same style fitting on either end. A male 90 screw in type.
Sorry to get your hopes up, but they may offer one with that fitting on the end.

Pitch that and get a simple cooler.

Just to keep this updated, I went to a couple hose shops today to see about rebuilding, or re-making this hose. Bumper-to-Bumper no longer rebuilds hoses. But after a good chat with one of the guys at Greenline Hose and Fittings, I think the way I'm going to go is to have a new steel line bent up, and then have new flexible lines supplied. The 90° banjo fitting to the pump will cut off and re-used with compression fittings, and the fitting at the steering box will be replaced with a -6AN standard fitting, again with compression fittings. So, I'll also need the thread adapter available through PSC Motorsports.

I am going to leave the return line alone as it's in good shape, I don't plan on using large tires, and Toyota thought it was adequate for the job. Plus it's been working for 30+ years - why mess with success?

If this approach gets too painful, then the back-up is to make a custom line with braided stainless steel. But I would prefer a proper steel line using the existing clamps.

I'll post up again with (hopefully) finished results and pricing.

Thanks for all the replies.
