My stock FJ 40 wheels were in sad shape and I've painted them and was about to put a new set of tires on them when along comes a good deal on powder coating.
I have searched and other than not being able to touch up and the cost I don't much bad about it. For a mostly street rig is there any other down side to powder coating wheels?

I have a set of FJ-80 wheels on my Tacoma that I blasted and had powdercoated. I had them done in a semi-gloss black. They have probably been washed 8 times in the last 3 years. That is doing some long trail/camping trips and Michigan winters (the reason I will not ever run steel wheels in the winter here!). I love them and they have taken dealer tech abuse when I had them rotated there a few times now. There isn't a scratch on them!

Well worth it IMO. Especially if it is mostly street-duty.

Powder coating is your best bet. It's quite expensive though the result is long lasting.

You shouldn't pay more for powder coating than having them painted. My shop will blast and coat steel wheels black for $40 apiece. Shop sround your area and get some referrals, it is worth yhe time.

I had mine powder coated (FZJ80) for the durability and corrosion resistance. Touch up is really tough if not impossible to get good results depending on color. Mine are two tone so I would never even try. I've scratched the powder coat on rocks but MEH its a trail truck to me even though I DD it.

But, if all you want is a simple black or grey just paint them IMO.

I had five done at Les Schwab's for 25 each blasted and powered. Love these now!

The skinny rims (6.5) took some convincing before accepting the 33/12.5/15 tires but at 15 psi and my OME springs she rides like a dream!

Those look like OEM factory steelies for a 40 series? If so, aren't they 5.5" wide? I know the ones on my 77 40 series are 15x5.5.

I am surprised the tire shop would mount a 12.5 tire on 6.5 or 5.5 rim. I had several tire shops that balked at mounting my 10.5 tires on my 5.5 rims.

For a street rig, powdercoating is the best option since it is more durable. But for an off-road vehicle, painting is the the way to go since it is easy to fix the chip unlike the powdercoated one.

Powder coated mine. Got a good deal since my brother in law owns the shop.

bleh, can't get a larger picture to take, you can get a better view in my garage.

From the pic it looks like the inside was blasted /coated also. Any damage from mounting the tires?

I had five done at Les Schwab's for 25 each blasted and powered. Love these now!

I would say if they are subject to a lot of road salt, the powdercoating is worth it. I have spray-bombed wheels and I had to redo them every spring here in MI. My powdercoating has been awesome after 4 years and still lokks great.

That is cheap for 25 dollars each at Les Scwab. Was this the going price? Do they have Silver for a Power coat? Tired of cleaning up the rust on my chrome steel wheels. What is the turn around time for the steel wheels to be done?

i rattle canned some steelies 7 years ago, they are still going strong.
paint is just easier to deal with.
What color did you use? If Toyota factory grey what color number?
