Powder coated black and up for sale!

IMG_7883.JPG

I talked to one of our materials and processes people yesterday. Her opinion was that if it was actually seeing 400F for an hour, that could be detrimental. How much, she couldn't really say but she was going to reach out to some of her contacts and try to quantify it.

I then called my local powder coat shop and asked about their process. It depends on the color and base material, but for most aluminum wheels, it's actually 325F for 15-18 minutes. Not 400F for an hour. So based on that information, I'm no longer worried in any way. That's not long enough or hot enough to heat the metal over 300F all the way through.

I powder coated mine for about $400. I ended up going with a very dark grey for both the wheel and the bead-lock ring. I left the lug nuts chrome and bought new center caps. The chrome accents of the lug nuts, ring screws and TRD center cap look great IMO. I was reluctant to go with a glossy finish and to leave chrome accents but so happy i did. To me flat black or matte black wheels look lie cheap spray paint.

That looks great. Do you happen to know the name of that color? I tried to find a dark gray in my local shop's color choices but they didn't really have what I was looking for. All of their grays are lighter than Toyota Magnetic Gray Metallic. I want the wheels darker than the body, and the only way to get there is black. I agree that your chrome accents work great on that combination. I may have my wheels and rings done first and see what it looks like all put together before I have the screws and lug nuts done.

I will try to track it down for you. I seem to have mis-placed my invoice. I used a Utah company called Full Blown coating UT Powder Coating Sand & Media Blasting | Full Blown Coating. They came highly recommended by a few members of our local club (Wasatch Cruisers) including Kurt from Cruiser Outfitters.

Welp, this is no longer my powder coat thread. :(

When I showed my wife some pictures of various wheels on gray cruisers, she said "black looks stupid". For the record, I disagree with her but I let her have this battle so that the next few (suspension, bumper, and winch) may go a little easier. I got some BFG KO2s mounted up today and she said "Hey, that looks kinda bad ass!", so I got that going for me...

It's not quite powder coat, but I've been working on set in my spare time. I wasn't a fan of the chrome look and have now nearly matched the brushed metal look on the center caps. I have a little bit of work to make them perfect, and I'm not sure if I should paint "TRD Forged" in red to match he center caps or maybe gray to match the wheels or not. Then I will be clear coating them.

I think those look great! Subtle, yet obviously different. I agree with your idea to paint the "TRD FORGED" red to match the TRD logo on the center caps. Wait, wait! Better idea! Paint the "TRD" part red, but paint the "FORGED" part grey to match the wheel. Now that would look sharp!

Did you simply ScotchBrite the rings? Or something else. Care to share your technique?

That is a great idea! I thought all red might be too much but mixing red and gray to fill in the letters is what I will do. To get to this point, I have stripped the rings down, thoroughly cleaned them, and done a handful of different steps of wet sanding. Now I just need to go find some matching paints.

Never posted the end result, but they were professionally reclearcoated after all the work was done. Since I'm giving up my search for a 100, they are up for sale in classifieds if anyone is interested.

Damn that looks good. I'm stealing that idea. What type of paint did you use for the lettering? Method/technique tips?

Paint was done with self etching primer followed by color matched cans mixed up by a local automotive paint store.

Overall took about 6 steps of sanding and then wet sanding. It was really tricky to get all the lines to be uniform and go in the same direction. That took a lot of time keeping the movement smooth and consistent. Then they were cleaned up and I had them shot with some PPG clear

Was the lettering painted by hand with a brush, or was it sprayed? Masked or sanded after?

It was all sprayed so the metallic would atomize correctly. It also wouldn't look very smooth if brushed. I masked off each section as close as I could but still sanded it all down again afterwards.
