So this happened over the weekend...

...which entailed a visit to Slee today to ensure it never happening again. But when arranging a rear bumper, why not a front as well? And the tires are nearly done, so let's go to 33s. And let's do 17" wheels, because that makes sense. And with all that, doesn't this thing need to get off the ground? Let's go OME BP-51. Oh crap, the wallet damage was enormous, but the truck's gonna be awesome!

That corner dent is nearly identical to what I had after Wipeout Hill at Cruise Moab this year, but to my surprise I guess the AZ heat and the magical Toyota plastic got together and healed itself. When I left Moab it looked like your photo and when I got home 12 hour later it was fixed.

Interested to hear what broke. After blowing up the diff in my 100, I can guarantee you that you’d know of it was the diff or not. And then the time the 80 diff let loose, same thing. Birfs blow differently than the cv joint in the tundras and 100&200 series. It could very well be a clean break

Yea, probably is a CV. With the quick troubleshooting we did on the trail and at camp seemed like it was the diff since it didn't matter if the truck was in park or not and I could spin either of the front wheels and wouldn't even make the DS budge. But after I got home and played with it a bit more, driver CV will get about a 1/4 turn when I wiggle the DS by hand but then DS freespins when in Neutral. So I'm thinking the inner side of the passenger shaft is what got a nice clean break.

Yes it is. It's the inner shaft on passenger side. We preordered CVs hoping it was that same break but where the CV goes into axle. So going to have all new shafts at the end with spare CVs.

Seems pretty common for the 200 diffs to break on the trail. Is this something common among most 4x4’s or just ours? I’ve been pretty lucky in the past and only had the passenger side diff boot need to be replaced. Makes me think a diff drop might be the way to go anytime we lift our rigs. Thoughts on that?

You mean CVs right now diffs? That's IFS life.. It's not just 200s. I'd go as much to say 200s have it happen a bit less. But that also could be the 200s aren't getting wheeled as hard as some of the other's or maybe diff drops could help. I know with where my break happened a diff drop wouldn't have made a difference.

When it happened to you was the passenger tire slipping when it gave? Also curious if you were locked or not when it gave out on you.

Had the same question! Maybe it's because I'm a noob but fully locked front IFS makes me hella nervous.

When I snapped mine. I think having lockers could've saved me from breaking. I had my driver wheel slipping and passenger had traction when I broke.
If front was locked power would have been sent in both directions constantly and not bursts of power being sent to the passenger side.

At least it isn't the diff and clamshell. Side shaft and CVs seem to be the fuse at the front end. Which is probably for the better as those parts are easier to replace and can still limp off hte trail wiit those broken.

Crawl may be nicer on parts but it's not always the answer to every situation. Like every other 4x4, SFA included, wheel hard enough and things will break.

All lockers were on. My driver-side front was getting some air at that time.

Thanks. Trying to get myself prepared for when this seems to inevitably happen to me at some point.

In all candor, I was worried about strain to my front diff and more…with my heavy, hard-wheeled, 14-year-old 200.

So… That heavily figured in to my motivation to get it all the way to Slee in March for gears/lockers, including front. Largely because I knew this woyld mean an opportunity to see any & all potential wear, etc in there.

And…sure enough… Front diff showed evidence of cumulative strain. I probably dodged a bullet just in time. The good news is…with front/rear lockers & 4.88s, my front end is fully renewed, stronger (esp when front locker is NOT engaged).

Truck performing better than ever now. It was painfully expensive, but was almost certainly….literally…make or break.

PS. Amazingly, my original 2007 factory (08 model year built in late 07) CVs were perfectly fine. Replaced them anyway due to zero added labor cost since already pulled.
