Not exactly wheeling damage, more like "prepping-to-go-wheeling damage"…

Sharing it here so no one makes the same error I did.

Got what was supposed to be a temporary, cheap, and non-destructive mount for my phone while I figured out a RAM mount set up…

I debated between a ProClip mount and an A-tach mount.
I liked the visual location of the A-tach mount better than the ProClip (very limited options on 16+ LXs), so went with it.

When following step 1 of the install process (basically use a plastic wedge to separate the trim a bit), two spots of lacquer/urethane/whatever, cracked and popped off the wood trim. :frown:

So now I need to:
  • Live with it
  • Get the trim replaced == $$$$$
  • Find a way to fix it myself. (I have no skills/knowledge for this, so if you know of a technique or someone in the Seattle area with skills, please, let me know)

Well that's a bummer. Can you get the piece off? Maybe take it to a local cabinet or custom woodworker shop, see if they can sand it out then re-apply a urethan finish. I assume that's real wood under there, but very thin.

Thanks for the suggestion, that’s a good idea on the cabinet/woodworking shop (maybe I should look at guitar restoration shops too since it has a similar look to it).

Sadly, I don’t know how to remove that piece or how hard it will be to do since it runs across to the passenger door.

I don’t want to blindly try removing it and make the situation even worse haha. (I’ve removed driver side dash panels following guidance in these forums but this piece looks like it might be one of the most delicate ones in the vehicle)

Are there manuals or documents that show how to remove trim in these vehicles?

Went out with the local club this weekend and played on some trails that were a little tight for a 200.

Hit a rock or something on the passenger side at some point don’t know when it happened. My slider may have saved a gouge going further down the rocker but point of impact was between the front wheel and the rocker. I’m still not really sure how I managed to hit a rock at that exact location. There are only a few new scuffs on it.

The fender metal is pretty mangled. I might be able to hammer it back enough and cover it with a new rocker. Or maybe it’s the start of making the wheel well larger for bigger tires….

Maybe you hooked it with the tire? Or something got between the tire and fender like a 3” rock?

Something must have got pushed up in there for sure. Just washed the truck and there are no hard scratches on the slider in the area. I’m thinking it was a tree root or branch. Considering I was the only 200 and most others were built dedicated trail rigs (80’s, 4Runners, buggy’s and one 40 on 42” tires) I’m pretty happy this is all that happened. Got to use my new winch and got pulled up and over some leges I probably shouldn’t been attempting.

Meh, just a minor blemish (although it's about 12 - 18 inches long). The slider served its purpose.

Went to club event, Fall Crawl, over the weekend in VA. Scraped a tree going up a hill and around an obstacle. The new BBS Pro wheels ain’t so new anymore. Sliders got some good use as well.

That mangled bottom section is plastic and extends down to the rear fender above your slider below the doors. It's held on by screws at that section (as you found) and beyond that it's plastic clips. I'm going to remove mine soon and try to repair as best I can.

Probably cheaper to cover that dent up with a snorkel than to fix it ;)
That's not a bad idea Geoff. Something I'm thinking about ;)

Unfortunately the fender brackets got a little bent and the passenger door rubbed against it while opening the door, pulled it back some. Went to a PDR shop yesterday and they had mixed thoughts ranging from $300-$850 on the repair. That would not address the uneven gaps between the fender and door or front bumper. Even if I cut a hole for a snorkle, I prefer the fender to be aligned on the edges/gaps.

I'm thinking of removing the fender (requires removal of a section of front Rhino bumper and headlight), bend the mounting brackets back to make the fender align and not rub aghast the door.... Take fender back to the PDR shop and they can push vs pull on the dent. I don't need it perfect and really don't want to go down the body shop route (which would include new paint and being metallic silver they would have to blend in to the door and hood (which has PPF on it).

Seems the newer ARB Safari snorkel is out of stock like everything else. May look at other snorkel options.

PDR shop pointed me to a mobile wheel repair guy working next door on a Karma wheel at the Bentley dealer. Drove to the back of the lot, weaving through various high end vehicles (Bentley, Aston Martin, Rolls, Maserati etc.). He looked at my wheels and asked are you going to wheel this again and I said of course. His reply - don't waste your money repairing, get some touch up paint and be good to go - flat black on those wheels ;) I was a little stressed backing up the rig trying to get out and around all those pricey obstacles in my way.

I have the Dobinson's snorkel. It seems like an ARB knock-off... very similar design but IIRC was half the cost... and had "Land Cruiser" on the side instead of "Safari". Contact @crikeymike if you want one.

My only gripes with it were (a) the bolts that came with it seemed like they were made of untreated steel and started to rust within a week (I swapped them for stainless steel ones at Home Depot for $3) and holes in the bracket that mounts the snorkel to the A pillar didn't correctly line up with the snorkel holes. To the latter I elongated the holes in the bracket but this likely would've also been fixed with some "zero height" rivets instead of the ones the kit came with. I gave Dobinson's my feedback, and they were going to look into it, but I don't know if they've changed their kits or not. (If not, the above are solvable for $10 in bolts and rivets, which is still quite a bit less than ARB).

Edit: Here's a pick of how my snorkel lines up. So you'll probably still want to at least pop the dent out (unless you're going to add fender flares) are the crease will show between the snokel and the wheel well...

Thanks. I have the new rocker panel now so I can see exactly how it attaches. I have one more wheeling trip next week and I’m waiting to fix it until after that.

Great feedback Geoff. I'll reach out to them and see if I can get one.

Ended up between a rock and a hard place this weekend.

Tree branch was unavoidable after a few bad decisions. Hoping I can pop the dent out.

Update: was able to PDR the dent (hard to see in the pics) but not all the scratches buffed out. Trying to decide how to handle that. Will attempt a little more aggressive compound but then may just hit it with touch up.
