I "think" the tranny issue was limited to the 2000 model year... and it was due to a specific part that was out of spec... but don't quote me on this.

174k on my 1999. So far, an antenna mast, a parking brake cable, a leaking rear 3rd brake light and a recent O2 Sensor (I think that a bottle of injection cleaner knocked something loose that set the code). Fit and finish is outstanding. Tranny, transfer case, differentials, engine are all tight, smooth and feel like a truck with 30k miles. I am on my fourth set of Michelin LTX tires, bilsten shocks and that is it.

Other than the gas mileage, this thing is great! Phil

Its by buddys truck....

171000, 1st gear on tranny slips pretty bad, but this truck has pulled trailers for probably half it's life, and it has been very poorly maintained, oil changes usually done at 10000 mile mark, once it went all the way to 20,000. Doesn't leak, or burn oil. Only things ever done were necessities because they stopped workin, starter, water pump and timing belt. Other than that NOTHING ELSE. SOB is amazing, it still runs like a top. I really think that the 4.7 v8 is one of toyotas best motors made.

Damn! Just ran to the store for some soda and my tranny blew!

How did I not see that coming? It's such a known issue, after all.

Shoulda bought a 98 or 99...they are so much better!

(Kidding...) :D

just a few threads about it. It seems to be more tied to 2000-2001 LC/LX. If you read they talk about a couple different components that were changed from the 98-99's that cause the failure.

hope this somewhat answers your question. I didnt specially search for 00-02 transmissions. My search criteria was "transmissions" in the 100 section......

Thanks for the links! You basically did my homework for me. I read up and, as usual, I think the truth lies in the middle somewhere.

Have there been some problems with 00-02 trannys? Yes, there have, but it appears to be a relatively small percentage of vehicles (in other words, nothing like Ford's 6.0 debacle).

More than other model years (98,99,03+)? Yes, seems to be evidence of that.

Is the percentage of problems enough to catagorize 00-02 trannys at "s***ty?" Not in my opinion, but that's subjective.

Sorry for the hijack-- back to your originally scheduled thread (high mileage 100's).

i would just go ahead and replace your tranny now.....:flipoff2::D:D:D

I'm seeing some issues with my 2000's trans. Rough shifting/A TON OF BASS at stop lights. I have to put it in nuetral sometimes. I'm watching it closely. But until it's behind me at a stoplight, I'm not replacing it, or until it makes really strange sounds and slips. But the manifolds... Piss me off every start. God it's annoying!!!!

I just started towing too!

You're trying to make me paranoid!

If it breaks I blame you!! :D

In all seriousness, I used to fix so many things that weren't broken...replacing perfectly fine alternators, shocks, water pumps, batteries, etc. because they weren't "new" and couldn't be trusted...took years but I learned that it doesn't make a lot of economic sense to replace something because it might break...plus I didn't enjoy my vehicles as much as I should have because I was always "waiting" for something to go wrong.

Like the "POS" 1990 Cherokee I mentioned earlier...kept waiting to blow the rear diff, or need to replace the EFI system...or have the supposedly junky tranny go out...was always a little worried on longer trips...none of it ever happened...

i wouldnt go replacing your tranny....that is just mental. If it goes out then just sell me the truck for pennies on the dollar and i will change it out....:D:D

Does 50K count?

I've got 101,xxx on the clock.
Driver's side exhaust manifold is cracked.
Transmission works like a champ - when I went to the stealership and I wanted to do a complete tranny flush, they told me NOT to do it. They said that since the truck had 100k on it and possibly the fluid has never been changed, they thought it would do more harm than good. Thoughts??
Replaced #7 ignition coil on Thursday.
