Replacing big ring with bash guard has proven many times to be a great upgrade! Cheap and very effective.

This may be a stupid question, but did you do anything to stop the derailer from trying to push the chain off the second ring in the event that your mashing through gears and accidentally try to shift to the third ring?

Im doing a similar mod with my bike but im adding a chain guide with a built in bash and deleting the third ring, instead of just swapping the big ring for a bash ring.

You need to adjust the screw on the derailluer. It'd be the one marked H. Just turn it in enough so it can go past shifting onto the second ring.

Not a stupid question at all. Some new front shifters are now equipped with a small switch underneath which lets you choose a three ring setup or two ring setup.

Besides that, just as someone else mentioned, with the cable loose, you would set the limit screw (marked H) so that it stops the swing of the der. from moving into the position of the outer chainring. Then adjust for correct cable tension. This is the setup that I use with a Shimano triple and a Race Face bash ring. Works perfect.

I have been wanting to get into cycling but I did not want to spend crazy amounts of money on a good bike. A friend of mine had a great looking bike and I asked him what brand it was, he told me "pure fix". I was a little hesitant because of the single gear, but the reason I bought this bike was not to compete professionally, I just wanted to ride around and loose some calories so I went ahead and purchased "the papa".

im rocking this set up right now.. it hurts getting back on the saddle after a riding hiatus, specially on a single speed
I posted this on another post, but thought it was worth posting the pics here as well....

Built-from-scratch Trek 4300. The only original parts are the frame and handlebars. I call it "Frankenbike" :D

She looks like Walmart's Greatest Hits but she shreds downhill like a madman's dream. Not too shabby!

^^THOSE are awesome.

Just bought a 2014 Pivot Mach 429 XT/XTR pro aluminum model. I've just set up the suspension sag, and dialed in the tubeless tire pressure at 29 rear, 28 front. I can say, that on my one and only short ride, the bike is faster than my tricked out Rocky Mountain Element 26". I'm going out on a long ride this Friday to put the bike through its paces.

I'll take post ride bike photos, too.
