Dieselcruiserhead,

It looks like you've got the new RockShox 15mm maxle. What do you think of it? I'm riding a Fox 32RL100, but have read nothing but good things about the 15 mm maxle.

Its supposed to be lighter and stiffer than the Fox, although I've never felt any flex with the fork.

Yep, shes a heavy one but pedals great due to the avalanche rear shock. Nothing like riding xc with a crap load of travel lol.

It's actually a 20mm, I don't think RockShox is making the 15mm, pretty sure Fox is though. My hubs were the last era Hadleys that don't have the 15mm adapters available. This was the biggest reason I chose Rockshox over Fox but I LOVE this fork, no complaints whatsoever. Reasonably light and super strong and powerful, it single-handedly upped my descending ability more than anything versus another 130mm I was on before that was way more XC. I was strongly going back and forth between this fork (Revelation 140mm) and the Fox Talas 140mm (I think they are both up to 150mm now).. I don't think you could go wrong with either and I have ridden them both and liked them both though most of my 'ride a lot' friends are switching from Fox back to Rockshox for a variety of reasons.

I nearly bought a Santa Cruz Blur once (brand new rental down in Moab) that was 5.5" with the Fox Talas and it would have been an awesome ride as well.. The question is mostly related to cost and availability of the 15mm axle which is still a little rare. I was on a 20mm through axle before so I can't comment on stiffness except I've never (ever) felt like I needed more either front or back, but also because my bike is stiff as balls as well (I think Ventanas are the most laterally stiff bike period)... This said someday I might mess with that thru axle rear some day for no real reason other than strength...

With our terrain here on the island I personally will never own a single pivot machine ever again.

My bullit climbed awfull, jacked in corners hard at Whistler and just overall did not do everthing really great.

Really enjoying a four bar pivot bike again, just not luving the 42 pounds it weighs.

It is weird because its an old school design.. I've also ridden some VPP and DW Link bikes recently and they're all fine.. I'll say that my Ventana just **rips** literally stiff as balls, nice and plush but literally climbs like a goat... It is pretty crazy the super technical climbs me and a lot of my friends on Ventanas are able to pull off... Seriously if I could buy any bike at any budget I would buy the same bike again, also after two seasons on it as well.. No regrets whatsoever about 5" AM style, the 650b wheels, etc etc... To me I think that says a lot...

Now thats a hot ride, I get it...... that suspension is much like the specialized which is a hot setup for climbing and going down hill fast.

Very simular to my Devinci, but much lighter.

I miss a ultra light bike and remember the days of a full rigid team issue Marin which weighed in at 22pnds dry, man I could bunny hop that bike into the back of my pickup truck. But I was big into trials riding at the time and spent a couple years riding with Ryan Leach expert trials rider.

I've seen a number of single speed bikes on mud and at the store.

Can you enlighten me? Is there a specific application or some kind of benefit?

After 20 years of adjusting shifters, canti-brakes, v-brakes and what not. Single-speed is just simpler: no cables! Hydraulic brakes are zero maintenance, add oil to the chain and you're good to go. At my age, I'm happy with three speeds when riding: Fast, Slow, and Walk. Suits me just fine now. Sure, there are steep climbs that are not possible and others are simply quad killers, but so what.

Warning: Once you go single speed, you'll never go back to gears...
