Let the build begin... it is official. Aside from rims and tires a few months back the first official mod will be a Saginaw pump! About 10 years ago I built a fine specimen of a vehicle (below in blue) and named it Sally, before her I had another quite similar truck named "Flo". I always loved that name for my truck, but thought I could ever name another truck the same as a previous (the FJ60 is my 35th!), but I am going to bend my own rule and I am pretty set on keeping this one for a while... so everybody meet Flo (in silver)...

The List

My goal with Flo is a DD that can wheel good! As few one off parts as possible, and mechanical as possible. I want to be able to hit a Napa at any time and get what I need, and I think I can do it (I have been doing lots of reading here). Everything will stay as stock as possible and I want to minimize trail spares a much as possible. I will do most of the fab work and do an extra of everything for the future.

Here is my wish list, some of which I have parts for and all of which I don't have money for:

  • SOA (I do have a complete 60)
  • Shackle Reversal (have material)
  • Rears Up Font (holding up the rear end)
  • 63" Chevy's (collecting dust)
  • Chevy or Dodge Dana 60's (4:11's)
  • Chevy 6.2 Diesel (I have had great experience with these, unless i can find a dirt cheap 6/4BT)
  • SM465, NV4500, or TH400
  • NP203 to NP205 Doubler
  • Roof Rack
  • More Lights
  • Bumpers (in progress)
  • 37's
  • Make her "water resistant"

I want to go diesel and to do that requires adapters, etc. to the Toyota running gear, so I feel going with a drive train that matches my engine manufacturer will be the simplest for my goals.

The other trick is this is my DD. I know their are many of us on the board in the same boat! So i have to be calculated with my mod's. I am not doing so well with that right now as "Flo" has been sitting in the driveway with a grenaded steering pump for 3 weeks!

Diesel is a Dream

So thats my big dream. Now for reality. I have a DD that doesn't do that very well right now. First project is a SAG pump upgrade. Why? Well I took apart my fluid spewing stock steering pump (top pic, nice jack-in-the-box effect when i pulled the shaft from the body, didnt see that coming) and found the bushing to be worn bad in the front and rear caps, so I tapped them out. After a call to CDan I learned that those are not replaceable parts and $370 (new pump) would get me on the road again! I had been reading about the SAG swap and $35 at PnP (bottom pic) fit my budget much better. Found an early 80's Volvo 244DL with 118k on the odometer that had my new pump. Brought it home and now I am ready to fab the bracket. Found several good posts and still haven't made my mind up exactly how I will do it yet... What is cool though is it has the exact same pressure fitting as the LC, flair and threads worked perfect, and the pulley is the right width and diameter!

not really sure where you are located but i have a dodge dana 80 hybrid from a 3/4 ton diesel. its a factory setup basically dana 80 center and dana 70 shafts and has 3.55 gears.

From one VW lover to another..what a freakin AWESOME example youve got there!

Sounds like you've got a good plan. I definitely encourage an overdrive in a DD since you'll be on the CA hwys. You'll have the doubler for offroad gearing.

Thanks all!

Unfortunatly I had to part the VW about 10 years ago to help support a new habit called a family. Unfortunate for the VW not the family!

yeah she was hit hard up front before i got her. i have a whole stack of paperwork. In the last 40k shes had:

Top end rebuild
Bottom end rebuild
Paint (not the best, but it will do)
New driver side window regulator

Wheels are 17" Pro Comp 1079 with the simulated bead lock. Tires are 285/70/17. it looked real good when i got them on but i made a left hand U-turn and had a horrid noise as my drag link end ground down the inside lip of the passenger side rim... 17" is not enough to clear it. So i am running 1.25" spacers up front and 1.5" spacers in the rear and everything is grind free!

I think she looks real good with that combo!

thanks for the info...

yeah, i agree, i'm diggin' that combo....running it without a lift at this point and no rub?
