After 20 years of adjusting shifters, canti-brakes, v-brakes and what not. Single-speed is just simpler: no cables! Hydraulic brakes are zero maintenance, add oil to the chain and you're good to go. At my age, I'm happy with three speeds when riding: Fast, Slow, and Walk. Suits me just fine now. Sure, there are steep climbs that are not possible and others are simply quad killers, but so what.

Warning: Once you go single speed, you'll never go back to gears...

Ok, I get it now. Actually most of us started on a single speed, then for some reason, I switched to 10-speeds, then 21 speeds. Now that I think back, like WAS much easier with single speed. What the hell am I doing to myself?

+1

Here is my commuter. Fed up adjusting brakes and shifters all the time, I converted it to a fixie two years ago. I don't remember I had to adjust anything since. It is totally maintenance free other than replacing tires and tubes. Sometime I wish my cruiser is like that.

Love the older Bianchi's, any steel lugged framed bike for that matter! Nothing builds your quads like a fixed gear! :bounce::bounce2:

Fixi fun is good for sure...... but I like to bounce also :)

Wow. Tell us more about the drivetrain of your mountain bike. I've never seen one like that - what is the advantage?

Two main things going on.... one by the chain going over the pivot pedal bob is eliminated. and the other is the Hammershmidt 2 speed cranks that give it a wide range of gears without the complications of a front diraliure on a suspension bike. the bike was set up for a DH ice race at a local ski area. (notice the studded tires) check www.brooklynmachineworks.com for more details. hand made bikes in Brooklyn :)

I have a catrike expedition.

It is my commuter do everything on asphalt trike. I love it. It is a bit slower than a road bike but to me it makes up for it in comfort.

One of the most common questions I get asked is "Is that thing hard to ride":D

Love the brooklyn man. If I had 8 grand to blow that would be my dher.

This thread is bringing back memories of past bikes.

I started mtn biking on a fully rigid Eddie bauer 21 spd equipped with the 300lx group. I then moved up to a rigid diamondback that had deorelx components. Next was a lugged cromo framed rock shox forked Bianchi ibex with full shimano Exage? kit (the light grey group that came out in the early/mid 90's that had rapidfire plus and was positioned under deore lx).

Next came a rocky mountain hammer w a mag 21 and xt/lx. Ritchey logic cromo tubes, one of my all time favorite bikes.

From there I went to an asama easton alloy framed, rock shock judy/magura hyd rim brake/xt equipped hardtail. Light as hell for what it was but the quest for a light bike stopped when I broke the frame on this one.

Next came a khs cromo hardtail, an early khs 4 bar dually, then another of my favorites the khs lt3 dually frame w upgraded rear links that gave 6" in the rear. (my buddy dealt khs for a while there lol).

Got rid of the khs and went to a brodie climbmax hardtail frame..... with a 6" travel gold stratos mx6 front fork, full sram drive train, king headset, thompson post ect. This one got abused but to its credit didnt break.

Next came a kona stab primo w 24" wheels/monster t/cromo cranks/avi rear shock. Broke this one at the head/down tube junction but had a lot of fun doing it.

That brings me to my current bikes, the norco 125 ht and the evilution (azonic) dher. Havent broken either frame so theres no reason to switch.

I put some shots of the bike in the Crank Bros. thread, but may as well post here as this is my main ride.

It's a Rocky Mountain Element 50 tricked up with a rear XTR derailleur, XT brake set and Crank Bros. tubeless wheel set.

I ride fast XC with quite a bit or rocky, rooty technical terrain here in MA. I'm lucky as I literally ride out from the woods behind my house and can go for 2+ hours at race pace and only have to cross one or two roads. The trails are mostly single track.

My ride is a 97 Cannondale Super V4000. Has a White Bros UD150DH fork, a dated but functional Fox Alps 4R shock, Avid BB7's, and misc other ****. Sorry for the bad pic quality.

Wow, This brings back some memories. I raced this same bike in Mammoth in '98 and ended up with a type 3 separated shoulder  Good bike back in the day.

My ride now is a decked out Santa Cruz Superlight.
