Have a read through this thread, lots of good info here: Ideas for improving the 2LTE - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/ideas-for-improving-the-2lte.680759/
It is possible to get decent power out of a 2L-TE, but it takes a lot of work and patience. I chose to engine swap my second LJ78 with a VW TDI, power and fuel economy have both improved significantly, but the swap took lots of time and work and wasn't cheap, even if I don't count my labor. 35's are probably a little on the large size unless you do some significant engine modifications.

Edit: if you only have a 2L then you are definitely better off swapping to a different engine. Is yours manual or automatic?
Sorry, I said 2L, it's actually the 3L (2.8 L -- Toyota 3L (2.8 L, SOHC) diesel engine: specs and review, service data - https://www.engine-specs.net/toyota/3l.html). Still very much a slug on the 35s. It's a manual. I see the threads on improving the horsepower of the 2LTE, but this one is not turbocharged. Much more heat-efficient but slower than a snail. Swapping may be my best option, but would like to try other things first...

you can run a turbo on that 3L you can go bolt on from Australia ( Turbo Glide, AXT etc ) or you can create your own .. would not be a rocket but will improve. You can even go very cheap and simple with 2L-T Turbo components ..

You can swap a 5L little improvement or of you are ready for tranny swap you can squeeze an 1HD-T and then the fun will begin !

Another cheap option would be a gasser V6 like the Chevy 4.3 or a Toyota one like the 5VZ

To re-power in the US with an alternate engine that requires "fitting" will START at north of $10,000.00 USD.

This is an expensive hobby.

If I did want to do a 1HD-T + tranny swap, do you happen to have any leads down there in Panama to find one and do the work for me. Up here in CR prices are ridiculous.

Hello,

A 1HD or a 1HZ is a tight fit on an LJ78. Extending the frame makes some more room, but some fabrication is involved.

You can also try a 1KD engine swap. It has decent power, four cylinders and since it is used on the Hilux it may be available on your neck of the woods.

A 1GD or 2GD engine from a Hiace or a newer model Hilux, respectively, is also an option.

I guess it might be possible to find a donor Hiace or Hilux for the swap in your location.

Mine goes great with 35s. You'll need turbo, boost comp and intercooler. With careful tuning, you'll have plenty of power.

I’m new here. Just picked up this LJ78, threw on the Iron Man kit and 35s. Love how it looks, but BOY is it ever slow. Cant even get it over 70km/k on flat highway. I need some help with figuring out my options on getting it more power. Ayuda por favor!
You said you put on 35s and now it's slow. Did you do anything to the gearing in the axles? Changing your ring and pinion will help and is a less expensive step than an engine swap. Not sure what stock tire size is for your truck, 28-29 inches??? and then you jumped to 35s. That's asking too much of your stock gearing with a small engine.

I agree, gearing is a simple and least expensive modification to help with bigger tires. Just remember you gotta do front and rear diffs when changing gears so factor that into your price.

Stock was 31”, but appreciate your point.

Guys, stock diffs are 4.88 on lj78. Perfect for 35" tires I find. As far as power, I can pull 8 percent grade at 90 km/h at slowest.

As far as a BRAND NEW crate with everything you need, $9,000 is nothing. Buy a brand new 1HZ and all the peripherals (plus high alt compensator) and THEN turbo it for a measly 8psi, and you're in way deeper than $9k... then you've got to worry about it blowing as the 1HZ don't like boost.

I'm more than happy to share my experiences of the R2.8.

It's been a game-changer and when paired with the right gearing, pushes this ol' brick just fine. I can go 85mph on the freeway, 5th gear up mountain passes and get 16mpg or take it slow and go 70mph and get 30 mpg. We geared the old girl with 3.7 and I'm running a mild tune. EGTs run around 900-1050 at highway speeds and the hottest it's gotten was 205º water temps driving through the Mojave last week when it was 110º outside.

As for longevity. Who knows. But if I can get 10 years without any major hiccups, it'll be a welcomed change after dealing with 25+ year old Toyota diesels for the past decade.

The torque numbers @AirheadNut posted were solid for that little R2.8. Seems very decent.

In this market, you'd be lucky to get an questionable FT/FTE shipped, refreshed and running for $9k and still might not make that torque.
24 valve diesel sounds better though 😉

Oh for sure! The R2.8 isn't as grunty. Your Troopy is going to be a beast!
