I have the Downey rear tank and it rocks. Seems top notch, and have taken it down twice to do some work on the bumper and haven't seen any dirt build up around the sending unit or any of the fittings. Super dry and clean and couldn’t be any happier with his product. I've seen cheaper tanks that would bend when putting weight on it. Try not to believe all you read and do your home work. People said they were rude and made various other comments, but after calling them and speaking with Jim (I think) I couldn't have been any happier with the product and support. I know you all are talking about the tank under the seat, but had to chime in on not all vendors are the same. Rust is a huge problem here.

This is not what I wan't to hear. I just received mine from Downey last week.
I guess I will find out after installation. Where are you finding original tanks for $50.00 more . Are these tanks under the passanger seat or under rear of vehicle.

How did this work out for you? I'm about to buy from him.

Just called, and OEM tanks are available. $650 was the number from Stevinson Toyota in Golden, CO. Going with CoolCruisers tank

Toyopartsdeal.

Get the OEM tank and forget about it.

My fuel cells are roto molded in a city 1.5 hours away, and my rig only hauls so many tanks, so it's safe to say I am selling them as fast as I can haul them. If you are looking for 22 gallons outside/under the rig, and stronger than the steel tanks, this may be the way to go.

Send me the info, I live in Denver and keep the 40 outside and dont drive it enough. Plastic may be better.

I repaired my OEM steel gas tank back in 2003-2004 using fiberglass. It lasted until last year! You can read about that here... Last year I noticed it was leaking again from the other corner. I added it to the list of things to spend money I don't have on...

So since I have started trying to find time to work on !Oy again, I got to looking at OEM gas tanks.
At Toyotapartsdeal.com prices have gone up a bit. They are now $345.49 plus shipping and taxes. For my 1971 shipped to KY : $403.97
CCOT's price for an OEM tank is $489.98 plus shipping and taxes.
Since it appears Toyota still makes them, Beno is where I plan to get one! I have a long list of small stuff I need to get from him...

Just went to toyotapartsdeal to look at the price.....

FWIW. 2025 update. 1974 1.5F with DUI and Webber 38.
Just removed a Poly tank of indeterminate origin installed by PO in 2007.

I have had consistent problems with fuel delivery over the years, blowing out mechanical pumps, running out of gas, poor flow, and getting worse over time. Now can't accelerate without bucking/running out of fuel. I've mastered the "pull the fuel line and blow back into your tank to get the pickup off the bottom" routine. It ABSOLUTELY DOES collapse and block the pickup if you run it low. I have all breathers hooked up. No gas smell and no leakage - just inconsistent flow.

I pulled the tank last year and cleaned all, put new sender in... just kept having problems. Replaced rusty fill neck.

So, with ALL coming out, I've learned:
Poly tanks suck. literally. maybe new ones are different. They are MUCH smaller capacity, fuel guage will never work. No baffling. Collapsible. All fittings on top to prevent leaking.
Never use FIPG on poly tank, it WILL slough off and get everywhere. Wall of Shame action. Was trying to seal the sender. Thought I was careful.
PO used 1/4" lines... should be 5/16" from what I can tell. Think its like drinking through a swizzle stick especially if there are bits of FIPG in the lines, LOL. My mech pump could not overcome the need for lots of suction. I used a elect pump inline to help. I like the shop vac idea!

I may have been okay if I'd replaced soft lines and blown out the hard lines last year. Lesson learned.

The scorpion carcass wasn't there last year, LOL. pics won't load, will try later.
