Changed my vote. S/c is expensive but worth it. Rig is much more fun to drive on te freeway now and still wheels at crawling speeds just fine.

Now if I could just fix my egr problem I'd be ecstatic.

With your lower mileage i would think supercharger. I'm talking professionally done here, price point goes supercharger, turbo (professionally installed), LS.
Awesomeness goes just the opposite - LS, turbo, supercharger.

That said, they all put the 80 series in a place it should be, grinning ear to ear power.

I never thought I would say this but after driving a 1HZ at altitude I take it over a SC any day. Mileage, power, and no need to worry about overheating what is not to like.
I just looked into this and the short answer is cost. First you have to find one and buy it then, to have it professionally swapped will cost you more, which is what I would have to do. There's no way around it, getting a supercharger is expensive and the other alternatives are even more so.

BTDT the problems with a SC is not worth the cost of admission living in the desert for me. The power increase is not that great IMO definitely not V8 power.

The longer 80 series interest exist the cost of power plant options will continue to drop.

The right find 1HZ is pretty much a bolt in not near the problems as a LS conversion or ?

5 speed 1HZ complete with left hand drive pedal assembly in Colorado:cool:

Well said.

JDM factory turbo diesel 80s are around the 25 year corner right now. :hmm:

Generally speaking they will have lower mileage and be in better condition than the current used crop in this market.

If you can't wrap your head around RHD take a US gas 80 and blend the two.

Thanks all. I think I have decided to do the lS 6.2 liter swap. I love my truck and plan on having it for at least 20 plus years. The extra 5-7k on having toed an do a real top job install will reap benefits for a long time.

I think I'll keep the original engine and maybe find a project truck for my wife. She wants a 60 series. Can you put a 3zfe in a 60 series?

In my case the SC was installed in 2000 with 80K miles. It has served me well for an adiitional 80K miles. I can't rember the total cost but it wasn't cheap by the time i added additional components like gauges, MSD-BTM6 ignition module to control timing based on boost, rising rate fuel pressure regulator and a few other goodies. At the time the only other possibility was the Safari Turbo but the cost was much higher, had to be intalled by a dealer and was only sold here in the USfor a very short period of time.

Today the SC might be the cheapest alternative but it is 25 year old technology but it matches a 25 year old engine. There is no off the shelf turbo package but can be pieced together without intercooler for somewhat less than the price of the SC. To really get a intecooled turbo with good horsepower you need to spend more for a standalone computer for more $$$$. If you are a Toyota purest these choices may still be the way to go. Very rarely will you find a motor that you can slap those options on without going through the top end of the motor $$$$. Diesels are nice but I would only put a Toyota motor in. It seems the Cummins and other brands the conversion parts are costly and hard to get. Seems like most owners put them up for sale not long after the conversion. The toyota V8 conversions like the 4.7L offers very little in performace increases and is costly. The 5.7L would be the cat's meow but not aware of it be done before. The best option is the GM LS variants but that gets pricey as well but you can go mild to wild, its state of the art and good parts availibility.

Interesting. I know diesels drive differently, but a non turbo 1HZ delivers 90 hp less than the stk engine and 75 ft-lbs less. Why not just install a 1HD-T?

You are correct my diesel numbers were messed up.

Great idea! I'm sure the 1fz is not a direct swap into a 60-seies, but is should be doable, and would be pretty badass!

One more thing to consider, is that the s/c install can be accomplished in relatively short order. An engine conversion is a much more complicated install and the time line is much longer to complete. If that matters to you.

I would really love a V8 with a 6 spd. But that is way beyond my DIY abilities. DIY install of Supercharger will be a 1/3 to 1/4 cost of getting a V8 swap done by a shop. Then worries about how well the swap was done, some shops can pull it off seamlessly, everything works perfect, others have teething problems.

If you are able to DIY then @Heckraiser gave a great list including cost to install a turbo. IIRC the cost was ~$3500 which is a lot less than the supercharger. I just finished mine and am not having any the heat issues faced by the SC crowd as the turbo only seems to put out heat when you are using it. I have been driving mine around the past few days of 100+ degree temps and have not passed 200 degree engine temps. So far I am limiting boost to 6 psi and all is great with with stock ECM running premium fuel, (no cel's). Depending on waste-gate & BOV it is easy to increase boost for additional HP gains...something the SC does not offer.

Do you have a write up anywhere or pictures of your set up?

My turbo setup was around $2200 including intercooler. All the major components were not chinese junk parts either. I did have temperature issues, but I was probably having the same problems before turbo, but never bothered monitoring. Coolant flush + new juice in the fan clutch, and I'm sure I will be 100% fine in summer temps.

Phil, I was going to do a write up but then got kind of carried away getting it done. Also, I had obtained (I believe) the last J-Pipe made by EMS before he went out of business.
