So I have an engine oil leak. It looks alot worse than it really is. I have used high temp silicone sealant to plug it, but looks like its time to re-seal it. I need a quick / easy solution.

Debating if I should :
  1. Unbolt the lower bolts and try to squeeze gasket material in. But that would release a flood of engine oil which i really dont want.
  2. Just remove the old sealant and apply new sealant.
  3. Apply new sealant on top of the old.
Is there any other cheap / quick option?

What you got there is a trail fix. Something to get you home.

You need drop the pan and replace the gasket if oil is leaking from the front lip of the pan. Kind of a pain with all the bolts but not difficult.

If it's leaking from the front cover, it's a bit more involved but still, not rocket science. There's plenty of examples on here of people doing it.

The gaskets are cheap, available from Mr T, and by the sound of it, you have some high temp silicone already but FIPG is recommended.

Getting any sealant to adhere to an oily surface (at all) is almost impossible.
Getting that sealant to actually provide an effective seal is not happening.

You're either pulling that cover off to fix it, or putting a sheet of cardboard on the floor.

Get a spray can while you're at it and repaint the cover and the pulley - it'll look like new.

While it may seem like a big job, the 40 is generally very easy to work on. Try the same job on any modern vehicle for comparison.

Nope.
Any of the "solutions" will not work on the long run, the leak will always come back.

Is it the oil pan or the cover on front?
not sure, I removed the old silicone yesterday, but was not able to confirm where the leak is. I agree removing the oil pan is the best / long term approach, but dont want to go down that route. So just applied new high temp silicone sealant and crossed my fingers.
