Has anyone had this happen. It has 300+k miles on it, but runs like new. She has an iol pan leak so I had the shop I use change the gasket. When inspecting the oil and pan they found some plastic teeth. Are these from the timing chain? I am a little wooried, but again she runs great!

Got photos of the pieces the mechanic found? x2, FZJ-80 or FJ-80(3FE)??

Yes it is an 80 series 1993. Sorry no pics yet. He says they are little plastic teeth or arms for the timing chain tensior or guide?

fj80...

1993 was the FZJ80 with the 4.5 1fzfe, 91 and 92 had the 3 fe and is the Fj80. I am going to assume that you have a 1FZ because the 3fe did not have a timing chain. With all that, yes, the most logical source of black plastic bits in your sump would be the tensioner guides. Probably looked like teeth but more just chunks of black plastic. At +300k I would just go with it as long as you are not taking it deep into the woods by your self. I am pretty sure that major surgery is required to replace the timing chain assembly.

sorry you are correct on the engine. I will continure to drive as is and probably look for a good used engine as the cruiser is very clean with no rust or other damage.

Number one rule in diagnostics - list the correct information about the vehicle so others can help you... Look on your driver side door - look for the tag - it will say what you've got. Report back -

get us some pics of the pieces and more info.

Yeah probably the timing chain slipper or guide, only thing plastic in the engine that i can think of that can end up in the oil system.

I noticed bits were missing on mine when i took the head off, I didn't care at all as the chain isnt going to slide off in any way any time soon.

Way too much work to replace them for some chipped corners.

Is the gear that's on the end of the distributor plastic/nylon?

Nope, metal.

As others have noted, it could be from the timing chain parts, but hard to say without more info. I have built tons of motors and have found lots of "things" in them. Stuff left in from the factory, tools, shreds/chips/hunks of parts from old repairs, etc. I would attempt to ID the parts, if that isn't possible and the motor is running well wouldn't worry about it.

Ok guys, I finally got a chance to go pick it up and they saved the parts. It is definately the guide that the timing chain runs across to keep it from rubbing metal on metal. It looks like it was about a 2-3 section of it. I have no rattle or noise at all from the timing chain, so I am good right now. She runs great, better than any of the 5 cruisers I have owned. I am going to drive it as is for now. I now have to decide if down the road I want to swap the engine or just do the repairs and refreshen mine. Although it runs perfect these days it does have over 300k. Keeping my own engine would give me piece of mind, but a 60-80k engine would be nice too as I don't plan on selling this one.

Some of the early 1FZ motors broke the guide. The question is; did it break and was replaced sometime in the past, leftover old parts or is it broken now? One way to confirm would be to remove the valve cover and inspect. If it were broken, would expect some chain rattle?

i have seen this before, it was off the timing chain guide. Best bet is to get in there and replace it.

That my friend is no small feat.

I would wait untill something far more serious calves before I would undertake the replacement of the chain slipper.

I believe its like a 10-15 hr job. Book calls for 16hrs of labor, OUCH!
