I'm putting in a new clutch in a 78 fj40, I'm also replacing the pilot bearing. Is it neccesary to coat the outer edge of the bearing before I install it? Do you apply any grease to the input and output shaft splines when assembling the tranny and transfer also? Thank you.

I do not grease the outside of the pilot bearing.

I put just small amount of grease on the input shaft where it meets with the pilot bearing.

*Remember to fit the pilot bearing to the input shaft before you install it into the end of the crankshaft*

Some people will cake grease on the pilot bearing to help hold it in place during installation. Other than that I don.t believe you need to grease it

Just how tight should the fit be? I had to greese mine and use a short piece of pipe to match the outer race and tap fairly hard with a hammer to get it in. Was that too tight?

Sounds almost like how mine went in! Had to use a slide hammer to get it out, tap new one in place, and then just a little grease on the input shaft! It would also be a great time to replace your rear main seal and maybe look at a transfer case brace!

And remember that once it's done it may drag enough to make you think something is wrong. My last one was very stiff for a hundred miles or so.

Thank you

Will anything short of a slide hammer get a pilot bearing out?

Some people shove the end of a grease gun in and pump grease behind the bearing to force it out...

you need one of these things, makes life easy and about 40 bucks. or you can break the race out with a chisel but you need to be carful not to damage the crank.

Well, I filled it with grease and drove a bolt fitted with tape into it. The bearing cap came out, and some balls..
Now that the old bearing is trashed you can run a bead of weld inside the outer bearing race that is likely still stuck in the crank. Once the weld cools the race will be easier to remove (the weld bead shrinks as it cools and pulls the race with it). Or you can break it with a chisel or cut it with a Dremel tool and cutoff wheel.

Or one of these - eBay lucky find.

those are nice..good find. they don't help much if all the balls fall out of the bearing tho. that is the style you need for the bearing in the TC output shaft. Easy make if you have a lathe. make it tight enough to pop in with a hammer, then grind it off the tool when out.

I cannot imagine grease on the outside helping, they come with some sort of an oil on them, and the fit is so tight I cannot see grease remaining on the outside.

My son's 68 bronco we had to cut the old pilot bearing out with a dremel. It was so old and toasted the pilot bearing pullers just tore through it and did not budge it. Autozone and Advance auto should have pilot bearing pullers you can borrow when needed. The 68 bronco is the only time I have had one fail to pull the bearing.

A socket is good to pound them all the way end GENTLY. puts the pounding on the outside edge and avoids any risk of messing up where the shaft goes in. I usually start them with wood.

Be sure to test fit the new bearing on your trans input shaft before installing it. I found a couple of bearings that were extremely tight on the input shaft and I doubt I would ever have gotten the trans back in with the bearing too tight.

Just asking this question again. I have a new pilot bearing and I cannot fit this over the tranny input shaft (1hz shaft on H55). Too tight. Just wondering how tight is should be. Seems like it should just slide on if I would ever stand a chance of getting it to mate to the motor. I dont want to put it in the motor until I know I can get the tranny mounted.
