Reporting back on what I've tried.
I wanted to be able to position the mount just right for me (requiring the least amount of looking away from the road, and close enough to reach without stretching), not block the vent, and have a strong connection with the phone. I gave up on magsafe charging.
I went with the Scosche MagicMount Pro2.
Using the metal plate that came with the mount attached to the OUTSIDE of my phone case on a Pixel 8 Pro, it provides an incredibly strong connection, easily withstanding washboard and rocky forest roads. Using a thinner metal plate inside the phone case was not nearly as strong. The position is good and puts the phone right where I want it.
Trouble is the dash is just a bit too curved at that spot for the suction mount to stick securely, it would fall off in a day or so, repeatedly.
Solution was to add a separate pad that sticks the dashboard with 3m adhesive on flexible wings and provides a smooth flat surface for the suction cup to stick to.
I used this eSamcore Sticky pad from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CYQ22PF2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
I'm 95% happy with it. Every several months, the suction cup still falls off the pad. Not while driving, but I'll just find it fallen off after the car has been sitting in particularly hot or cold weather. Clean it with a wet rag and re-stick it and its good for several more months. Good enough for now, but I wish this mount came in a version that just glued to the dash in the first place.
