That third piece looks like an oil pan drain plug gasket; is it semi-rigid,
rubber coated?

Has anyone tried slathering the hardened grommet with Brake fluid or Castor Oil/Alcohol mixture and softening it that way?

I coat the new grommet with dielectric grease (which is a thick silicone grease), inside and out before installation, that seems to keep it more pliable longer. I think once the rubber has turned to stone there's no way of softening it up.

Finished, the replacement. With a pair of vise grips, wiggled the valve in all directions until the bottom part of the grommet broke off and fished it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. 10 minutes tops. Btw the third piece was a oil drain gasket.

Mine was extremely stuck. I tried the leverage technique, nothing. I tried getting inside the engine bay and pulling up with all of my might, and nothing. What helped was cutting the top part of the grommet which causes the nipple to fall inside. Then I got some white lithium grease and coated it all over the hole. pulled the nipple back up with enough force to keep it in place and held a lighter on the bottom of the nipple for about a minute. Then grabbed by pliers and pulled and wiggled with all my might and it popped right out after doing that for 15-30 seconds. I then broke up the bottom part of the grommet inside the "head gasket or whatever it's called" then grabbed some long tweezers and got them all out. Tweezers are the go to.

Next time pull the valve cover and do the PCV / spark plug tube seals / valve cover gasket all at the same time. So much easier on the workbench.

I was going to do that and I'll regret not doing it because I most definitely need to do the spark plug tube seals and gasket. Still waiting for the valve cover gasket to come in. Does it require any special tools?

No special tools needed, other than be careful not to scratch the aluminium surfaces with a screwdriver (or whatever tool ends up working) when removing the spark plug tube seals (they are stubborn to remove). Be sure to wash off the engine before taking things apart.

Hi Fremay, I'm looking at buying this kit; I was looking for an air-leak this morning and wiggled the PCV hose and it wiggled then popped off into my hand. So on my 97 80 Series, the OEM PCV is plastic with a spring and metal fitting. The one from Wits, it shows a metal PCV Valve, no spring, no fitting. Sorry for the greenie question. Just want to be sure I'm ordering the correct part.

The Toyota PCV valve is metal, any Toyota dealer or Wits End will sell you the correct part. You'll want a new PCV hose and clamp also; ditto for the breather hose next to it. Check the large air intake hose for cracks between the pleats, IME cracks appear on the underside first.

That's great if it comes out in one piece. The few I've removed were so brittle from heat/age they crumbled and the pieces fell into the baffle box (can be removed with narrow needle nose pliers). FWIW

Mine is wobbly as well. Grommet is brital but the hose looks new. Could the previous owner not of installed it correctly for it to wobble a little or am I missing something.

You need to get a new grommet.

Also, the factory PCV valve is metal, not plastic. If yours is plastic it will be a poor fit.

The grommet is a pain to change because they shatter and fall in. There are many threads on here that describe how each person replaced theirs.

Sounds good. Thanks. It is metal and must be moving due to the grommet that is shot.

Replaced mine this past weekend and it did not want to come out. Tried clamping vicegrips with a block of wood under it for leverage with no success. Ended up pulling it out by clamping the visegrips down and pulling up on the vicegrips with a slide hammer. Popped right out with half the grommet. Used a pair of long nose needle nose pliers to get the other half of the grommet out.
