Reviving an old thread. Mine did not want to come out but the screwdriver/hammer technique finally did the trick after trying all of the other techniques first.

One thing to keep in mind, the cast aluminum valve cover is fairly thin on top, hammering on it could possibly crack it. I found this when I removed a valve cover thinking the oil that was leaking (out the side of the valve cover where the spark plug wires go in) was coming from the spark plug tube grommets. Nope.

What I found was a depressed crack in the spark plug wire "valley" near the front. Best guess is that someone used an impact screw driver (or hammer) to help remove a spark plug wire cover bolt. They covered up their mistake with some RTV which of course eventually failed.

Nothing.

The bits of grommet will sit inside the valvecover baffle and shouldn't cause any damage. The worry is that they may work their way down and block an oil return passage. Slim chance, but theoretically possible.

If they work their way all the way down to the oil pan, the suction strainer will catch the bits. Eventually they would come out when you drained the oil.

However, that being said, I recommend trying to get all the pieces out. The shopvac trick seems to work best for me. Any tiny bits that fall down, just don't worry about them.
Guess what I'm doing this weekend? Y'know, hunting for little bits of the PCV grommet. Oh, and cleaning the charcoal cannister.
