I'm thinking about performing the party trick to my transmission but wanted to ask a couple questions about it first. Basically because I'm scared to death to throw my transmission into park while rolling down the road at a high rate of speed.

So the first is this, what is the exact procedure that you guys do, that have done this successfully? Roll about 40-50mph and toss it into park for 5 seconds and back into drive?

Next, what exactly does it do when you do that? I'm not talking mechanically, I mean, when you throw the shifter into park, what happens? Does it make all kinds of noise? Does it jerk? Does it freewheel? Do little pink fairies come flying out of the tailpipe and wave their little wands and go, "look sucker, it's fixed"? I just want to be prepared for what it does.

The problem I'm having that I hope it will fix is, when it needs to downshift from 3rd to 2nd, it free wheels and goes to first, over revs the engine and I let off the throttle, then I'm back into 3rd. If I manually shift it into 2nd, it will freewheel for a moment, then stick into 2nd. That's the only issue I'm really having other than it seems to also shift through the gears incredibly fast...meaning I'll be in 4th gear before I'm at 30mph sometimes.

Anyway, I'm just curious about this whole deal. Thanks for any and all advice.

I have no idea, that's why I want to know for sure from someone that has actually performed it. I've searched and all I come up with is people talking about it and not actually explaining it. Maybe I just haven't dug deep enough.

I did a 'Rodney Flush" first and then the party trick. Like you I was scared shaatless of throwing the tranny in park while rolling down the road. It fixed my issues. I did it several years ago and I was never more worried than I was during the 5 second countdown. No noise, no bucking, no pink fairies but I do seem to remember a chupacabra in the rearview mirror;)

What was your issue though? And thanks, I'm not worried about the chupacabra, lol. Just the parts of transmission I'll see in the rearview mirror!!

It was slipping between second and third

Never heard of the party trick (well I did meet this one gal that could do amazing things with a ping pong ball, but you had to feed her $20 bills whenever a new song came on )

So tell me more about this trick...

If I remember correctly , I was doing 40-45 when I did the TRICK

Any Professional parking valet guy :hillbilly: can explain the trick.
Porsche, Bentley, bimmer and star will turn a dull day in a party event.
Maybe the only good next great thing is starting a cold Ferrari full throttle and hear the ecu shut the engine down :slap:

Let me start off with what I was hoping to fix and then what it actually did.

****Do this at your own risk. I am not responsible for your transmission, should you damage it!!****

See, my transmission seemed to shift ok in every aspect except one...when I need to downshift from 3rd to 2nd (like going up a hill), it would downshift from 3rd and skip second and go to 1st. Then I would have to let off so I don't blow the engine since it's redlining and trying to hit 1st gear. So since I would let off, then it would go back to 3rd since it didn't see I needed that kind of pressure in the transmission. If I manually pull the shifter down to 2nd, it does the same thing. So what I do is pull it down to 2nd, let off the accelerator pedal until I can tell it's not in 1st anymore, then drive off in 2nd gear and everything is fine. So basically, that's what my problem has been that I was hoping to see some improvement. That did not improve at all...nothing changed in that aspect of the transmission, still does the exact same thing.

But...what did change unexpectedly, was now my shift points have changed a little and it seems to hold in gear longer than it did before. Meaning, if I drove like any normal person would with a 1989 fj62, the shift points would be so quick, I would be shifting from 3rd-4th at under 30 mph. Now it seems to have made it where my transmission seems to hold in all gears longer and makes it feel a lot more peppy on take off. So that's a plus in my book.

I'm still frustrated about my downshift problem and I'm really hoping to get that taken care of. It's really irritating since when I need to downshift to gain speed up a hill, I end up actually loosing speed since I have to monkey with getting it in gear. If anyone has any suggestions on how to possibly improve this issue, I'm all ears. I don't want to swap transmissions and I'm hoping to not need a rebuild.

Hope this helps someone wanting to know what happens when you throw a transmission into park!
