I have a 1996 LC. Just did the Part Time conversion. My LC has factory lockers but no CDL switch. Is that normal?? Seems like that should come with the factory locker option. Anyway, I got a CDL switch out of a 3rd Gen 4runner (I think). I installed the CDL switch and did the 7 pin mod. Something is not working as the vehicle is always in 4x4 and I do not see any dash lights when I press the CDL switch. Do I have the wrong CDL switch? Thanks

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow. If the CDL switch is not working, wouldnt it be stuck in 2 wheel drive? Does the factory jumper plugged in make it locked or unlocked?

Was the pin 7 mod your part time conversion?

The Landcruiser is full time four wheel drive. The pin 7 mod only stops the CDL from (automatically) locking when you shift into low range. Once you do the pin 7 mod, you need a working CDL switch (an emergency flasher switch works) connected to the plug hidden behind the stereo to lock the center diff.

A part time conversion requires removing the viscous coupler and center differential from the HF2AV transfer case and replacing your drive flanges with manual locking hubs...and to do it right requires replacing the birfs or cutting a 2nd snap ring groove into the existing birfs.

Is that what you did, or did you just do the pin 7 mod?

The pin 7 mod just prevents your center diff from locking when you go into low range. it does not make your transfer case a part time case. With pin 7 mod you need to add a CDL or hazard switch to manually lock the center diff in either High or Low range.

Yep...need more details. Also...cut that rib off the hazard switch so it fits. Youll see.

Yes, I have replaced the VC in the T case..... Shouldn't this thing be stuck in 2 wheel drive without the CDL switch?

If you put a spool in the transfer case and removed the center differential and VC, then you are on the right path.

How do you know the transfer case is in 4 wheel vs 2 wheel?

So you've installed selectable hubs on the front axle as well as the spool to replace the center diff and VC?

X2 on how are you testing that its still in 4x4 and not 2wd?

Only '91-92 FJ80's got the CDL button in North America, '93+ had F&R lockers as an option, the wiring for the CDL button is present in the dash, but no CDL button was installed from factory.

The factory hazard switch will work as a CDL for a test with a small modification to one of the tabs, but you need the hazard switch to drive as your turn signals won't work with the switch removed from the circuit.

Yes, I have modified the transfer case with a spool. Yes, I have selectable hubs. The vehicle is on jack stands, I can watch things spin. I will go modify my hazard switch and report back. I am very surprised that all 4 wheels are spinning. I would think that without the CDL switch that the CD wouldnt be L'ed.

Was the truck in low range when you removed the center diff and VC? If so, the motor would have been in the locked position. Have you tried cycling between high and low range and engaging, dissenganging the shift motor with the CDL switch while the motor running to see what is occuring?

Did you check the wiring is connected properly for all the sensors and shoft motor?

I hooked up the Hazard Switch and it is working as expected now, thank you. I have not put it back on its tires yet and will take her for a spin tomorrow after I get a few things buttoned up. Can you shift into 4x4 on the fly? I know you can not shift it from Hi to Lo while moving, I am asking if the CDL button can be pushed while driving with the part time conversion.?.

Good to hear you got it sorted. With the factory stock setup you can lock the CDL on the fly, with a part time kit installed I can't say, but you'd need to have your hubs already locked if you wanted 4x4 without stopping regardless.

I wouldnt engage 4wd while moving, the front shaft isnt spinning in 2wd and the rear is spinning fast...that would put alit of strain on the drivetrain.

The factory setup allows shift on the fly because front and rear and both spinning with only marginal speed differential when turning.

Devil's advocate: if you hope to engage 4x4 while moving, your hubs would need to be locked already, so the front driveline will spin at the same speed as the front tires. But I don't have a spool in the TC, so I can't say how it will react in real life.

I don't have a real part time kit, just the part time hubs, as I'm unwilling to give up AWD. But I do drive around all summer with the front hubs unlocked and the CDL locked, feels like 2wd from the driver's seat, but the entire front driveline continues to spin, just uncoupled from the front wheels.

You can shift it on the fly if the hubs are locked. Do it all the time. Personally Im not a huge fan of awd. I prefer 4x4. Did the pt kit on my 95' and going to do it to my lx. Maybe even the 92'.

I drove her last night. So far so good. I just did a complete overhaul of the drive train from the T case to the axles and I appear to have most of the parts in the right places and the bolts are tight enough! My first LC, I am used to working on Jeeps. Thanks for the replies about shifting on the fly.

After you have put a few hundred miles on the truck, crawl under and re-torque the 3rd member bolts. I had a small gear oil leak in the rear after putting new gears/harrops in and then pounding through the Utah desert for 800 miles.

I would not recommend going in and out of 4WD on the fly it can make bad noises if done under load. BTDT

...and to do it right requires replacing the birfs or cutting a 2nd snap ring groove into the existing birfs.

Only 4/1994 - 1/1998 require the upgraded birf or second snap ring machining. The birfs on the earlier models have the second snap ring groove from the factory.
