can somebody tell me what this part is that is behind my transfer case? my only guess without looking at it closer or tearing it down, is a parking drum??? could i be right? if not please fill me in

also, PO mentioned this 40 had an overdrive in it. this 40 has a SBC and a M22(Muncie) all coming out next week. just hoping you all could help me ID a few parts before it comes apart...

thanks:wrench:

Howdy! Yup, that'd be a parking brake drum. Looks like an OD that only works in 2 Wheel drive. John

I don't think I've ever seen that style of OD....

Please post up some more pics of the t-case, OD and adapter.

Phil

happy to, just gotta get back out there to take some shots for you.....may have some from the top. lemme look

Do a search here for Hone-o-drive. Early 2 speed 2wd only planetary overdrive. Commonly referred to as a Bone-o-drive. Its a pretty weak design - I blew mine the third day I had my truck. Even then (1986), parts were unavailable. If your rig is going to see any serious use, the hone overdrive needs to go.

the OD is coming off on my next days off...just got my 700r4 torn apart and rebuilt, ordered the 50-8901 from Georg at Valley Hybirds and putting it all back together ASAP!!!!

You may want to source a known good three-speed/10 spline transfer case, as removing the bone a drive from the back of your existing transfer case will require the transfer case to be torn down, and you will then need to source a new output shaft for your case as the one for the bone a drive is not compatible with a stock transfer case, unless you are using the bone a drive.

Someone may want to purchase it for spare parts if it works. I would try and sell the whole transfer case complete, and simply replace it with another complete unit.

Georg should be able to help you with this.

daaaaamn, had no idea that may be the "case"..haha!!!!
no one has mentioned that yet, we will see i guess. i have a 3spd 10 spline in place now, hoping i can just remove the Muncie and OD with no work to the TC...then again, might make sense to do it now while its out then later...hmmm

i know the 700r4 is a very long tranny but im hoping by removing the OD i can gain atleast an inch or so in the DL and then stretch the wheelbase and maybe even move the motor forward a bit..

Oh you will have to tear down the transfer case in order to remove the bone a drive, make no mistake about it. You will also need an original rear output shaft for your transfer case, as the bone a drive unit will not work for a stock application.

Why do you want that?

It is not going to work with your 10 spline adapter you just purchased?

(really) didn't purchase it yet, was waiting for Georg to finish up a project before placing the order this evening, then you made a good point...we spoke and hes recommending another 4spd and selling the 3psd with OD i have...make more sense?

sorry i lied..know anyone with a TC for sale??
