My '74 55 has a parking brake cable that takes what SOR refers to as the Wave Washer - #22 in the diagram. I did NOT see what they are referring to as Cable Clip (#26) when I was attempting to separate the cable from the backing plate. The SOR page makes it look like both are used?

When I got the wave washer off, I think it deployed as all of the sudden it was gone - never to be seen again. Sadness...

I have an FSM for what must be the '72 or earlier MY. The illustrations are not great. All it refers to is a C washer for the parking brake cable. My '78 FSM does the same.

Can anyone she some light on how the parking brake cable would have been secured at the backing plate?

TIA!

I'm no authority on this, just looking at my old microfiche. I'm seeing the washers you mentioned. On my '72 fj40, the cable goes into backing plate and is secured with the c-clip that crimps tight. I'm not really sure what is being referenced with the ID numbers under description, except ID equates to millimeters. So it looks like you have to pick the one that meets your needs.

I removed that assembly from my FJ40 and am switching to the floor brake level. My knee was always in pain from jumping back in when I left it idling.

I got a short cable from OZ for about $25. The hardest part was getting the lever and bucket to match.

I just replaced my PB cable today. There is a single metal clip (26) that is bent into place in the groove to hold the cable in place into the backing plate for the 4 sp transfer case. A crappy design but adequate, I guess.

I was looking at the FJ-40 on the SOR page.

Here is the FJ-55 diagram. They list a different washer!

Can anyone 'splain this to me?
I'm sure you've realized by now that the 40 and 55 parking brakes are mirror-image of each other, so the backwards wavey washer would be different from the frontwards wavy washer. Sorta like a reverse threaded nut.
I don't remember that washer being wavey at all.
The parking brake cable that Toyota (and everybody else) sells now (for a 40) is a bit longer than the original '74 55 cable. I need the extra length for my doubler and it fit just fine.

The tiny clip that holds the PB cable in the PB backing plate is very small, not like the typical horseshoe clip.

Nope. Different.
I cut off the bracket that comes on the cable, then it works

.

do you have any before tech. pics of the bracket mr. pighead , before you cut it off to make it work ?

Nope. Wasn't that interested in it, seemed to be a routine 40 thing that was in the way.

I am keeping the bench seat in the Pig, so I’m not sure how well the floor lever would work.

That sounds like it matches my experience with what I took off.
I wish it had not gone flying!

PS: how are the Maine Coons?

Wow, thanks!
I’m guessing a replacement 40 cable will be less than sending out to Push-Pull for a custom job!
So it is a perfect replacement for the 55?
