Too far north. Too far east.
Tardy with this. The original plan:
  • Drive US89 north from its origin in Flagstaff, AZ to the Canada border.
  • Cut across over to the Williams for a visit.
  • Drive US93 home, with a detour to Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area.
Reality. Fires, fires, and more fires. The Lolo Motorway was on fire, so I couldn't cross from US93 to US95 on this scenic backcountry trail. The Magruder Corridor was on fire so I couldn't cut across back to US93. Stanley, ID was on fire so I couldn't go that way from US95 to US93. So I said to heck with it and came home US95.

I started at the Overland Expo in Loveland, CO. From there, two nights in Rocky Mountain NP on my way to SLC where I picked up US89. Of course, the Land Cruiser Museum was on the way so I stopped in. Then I took US89 up through Teton NP, with a detour on the Rockefeller Memorial Parkway on my way to Yellowstone NP. Then back up US89 with a detour on the scenic Beartooth Highway/Pass (US212) for a couple nights. Finally back to US89 up to Glacier NP and the Canada border.

A view near Beartooth Pass. Smoky but still an impressive view.

After taking a quick picture at the US/Canada border I dropped over to Glacier NP, and drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road that runs east-west through the northern part of the park. On the far NW corner of Glacier NP was Kintla Lake. I decided to head over there for two nights thinking it was out of the way and probably not very crowded. Ya, oops. That place was hopping with hikers and boaters. Fortunately, it was mostly day use and not too many campers. I then cut across north-western Montana after a quick stop at the US/Canada border station off US93, then to Troy, MT to visit Shawn and Jill.

Saturday afternoon I went with the William's to the chainsaw carving competition in Libby, MT. Then it was time to hit the road. I made two detours off US95 to visit a couple old cedar groves, the Hobo and Settlers Groves. I cannot lie, I like big trees. After spending the night at the Hobo I continued down US95 to Hell's Canyon Natl Rec Area. It too was on fire on the Idaho side which limited my exploration.

This looked like a designated dispersed campsite off the Rockefeller Memorial Parkway.

Amazing pictures Pappy! Keep it coming!
I could add a few more. But, I did an encore trip in October. I need to resize the pics from that trip to share.

Wow. You are clearly enjoying overlanding and we are enjoying your trip reports. Looks amazing. Thanks for sharing Pappy!
What I'm really enjoying is the new engine. That truck is no longer a chore to drive.
