Over on the Grand Wagoneer forum, this would probably fall under the 'Prissy' section...

I've stripped and repainted the front wheel hub cylindrical covers. I was hoping that the worn patina on the actual hub cover, with the lock, would be ok with me. There is nothing wrong mechanically with the hubs, so I am cautious about taking them off, just to paint them. To do it right, it looks like there is a locking ring on the inside and a spring/ball bearing set up to be careful with, to clean and paint the two pieces - ring and 'knob'. Am I better letting sleeping dogs lie and leave it alone or am I making a mountain out of mole hill, and should grab a socket and take 'em off?

Painted mine and was glad I did. Didn’t end up perfect but a rattle can rarely does.

Go ahead & paint them if you want. It'll chip off again in no time. The aluminum pores get contaminated with oil/grease and rattle can paint (or anything) won't stick for long. It looks great though while it lasts.

Sounds like a good use for a vapor degreaser. I suppose the EPA has banned all the good solvents though. Trichloroethylene was a good one. It would penetrate and flush out the porous metals. Left zero residue.

Maybe strip old paint, give the parts a good cleaning then soak them in room temp acetone for a few hours?

Dissassmble, bead blast, bake in an oven at 450/475 to boil out any contaminants, powdercoat. Yeah I know wrong color. As far as durability - unknown. As a LC rookie I also learned how easy is it to tear these up removing/installing wheels.

Or you could just run them as is.

Yeah I know wrong color.
That's the color of the locking hubs on my '71 FJ40 with a mini-truck disc brake conversion. I may replace them with a set of FJ60 locking hubs I picked up here on MUD several years ago. Nothing wrong with the red though.

Yeah I guess it was a brain fart on my part. I have an 82 truck and the hubs still have good color to them. The hubs on my 62 were so faded I assumed they were all red.

Saved me from having to buy a pound of gold powder to do the dials in any event.

So here is a dumb question... is there a cut-off date fore the red vs. orange/copper caps? I see both on the trucks but always thought the red were only seen on the mini-trucks and the orange/copper were seen on the land cruisers????? This is something I need to do this year and rebuild my knuckles (again, as apparently I did something wrong 4yrs ago).

Paint em!

Worst case replace the spring/ball/o-ring and face gasket. We (Cruiser Outfitters) stock them all and its relatively quick and easy to do. I'm rocking blue faces on my 40.

FAQ: What color was factory on my Land Cruiser?
Great question, we are working on comprehensive guide, in the meantime please call. 9/75-1/79 4x/5x would have come equipped with either solid drive flanges or ASCO hubs (ASCO later became AISIN). Many with solid drive flanges were replaced with WARN hubs at the dealer level before being sold. From 1/79-80 the 4x received a grey AISIN hub, after 1980 the 4x/6/ & 7x received a gold colored hub. All non-US 8x/10x Land Cruisers received gold hubs. These can be retrofitted to US models with some modifications. Cruiser Outfitters

But choose whichever color suits your fancy :D

Neat! Thanks Kurt @cruiseroutfit for the piece of trivia... I need to rebuild mine this spring so will completely pull them apart, media blast and then paint.

What’s a good type of paint to use rather than traditional rattle can?

engine paint, like duplicolor possibly?
