Proud owner of a 1976 fj 55. Have not taken delivery of it yet but got the carb and am in the process of rebuilding it. I was so excited when I drove down to look at it that I forgot to take pictures. Soon and hi

Welcome Pugsly!

Get those pics soon!

'76 is a good year with those disc brakes up front.

New '78, new to Mud

After several years of pursuing this vehicle I finally acquired it. It is a 1978 originally from Oregon, shipped to Maryland around 20 years ago. It had some maintenance when it arrived in MD like new clutch, tires, and paint but then it has mostly sat outside since then. I tried to buy the truck years ago but it was priced out of my budget. Two years ago the previous owner asked me again if I was interested but at the time I was up to my neck in a jeep project and couldn't do it. At that time the guy offered it to my father for free. I would have taken it if I'd known that free was the price:o, oh well. My dad messed with it for a year and bought a ton of body patch panels from bobm but ultimately decided it was too much of a project for him. Now I am trying to make a reliable driver with it. I've been having carb, radiator, and now water pump set backs. It's my only transportation so the sooner I can get it on the road the better. I've always enjoyed and lurked on this forum, so now it's proly time I post some pics. The lifted pig('75 w/350 465, spring over, detroit in rear, 38's) was one that I owned about 15 years ago in Montana, sold it to a friend who still has it. I took that pic before I owned it, love at first sight!

Thanks Bob. My dad is Frank, not sure what his Mud handle is though. You would have sent the parts to Confluence, PA, probably close to a year ago now. It's very impressive metal. I need to prime the parts and hopefully I can get them on the truck next winter. I was of the opinion that this pig was too far rusted to be worth saving but seeing some of the other work on this forum makes me think otherwise. The roof is what scares me on this one. Regardless getting it to a reliable driver is step one for me.

My 1/1970 Pig
Weber 32/36, some rust, three speed on the floor, vacuum t-case

lots of previous owner applied bedliner and THICK bondo. They did put put a brand new headliner in it though. rear window is totally non-op, been working on a liftgate like deans87 did.

plans are:
dual circuit power brakes
saginaw steering
SM420/twin stick t-case
rear bob-job
EFI (maybe)
rust repair
paint

I've already had to rewire it from the dash to the grille, fabricate a new exhaust.

The lifted pig is in Bozeman but it's grey/light blue now and the engine's out of it. I'd like to seen it move under it's own power again. That truck was unstoppable, way too much fun.

Bob, yeah Stark was the guy. I took a welding class two years ago and have been wanting to invest in a welder since, so this is the perfect excuse. I might be interested in some of your roof repair steel in the future. Still having cooling issues at the moment so first things first.:wrench:

My PIG

I was going to spend $20,000 on a new Chevy truck, and fortunately I came to my senses in time. Then I was looking at the FJ 40 for months, and had actually gone out to see several of them. I figured I could haul most anything I needed to haul in my trailer behind it, and it would be way easier to park than a big truck (At least without the trailer it would) Then my wife saw the FJ55, she fell in love, and that was the end of THAT story. We have dogs and their big kennel fits in there like it was made for it. So we finally found a 55 we wouldn't have to drive half way across the country to bring home. I was actually able to drive it home before I started tearing into it.

Attached are a few pictures. It has some rust in the usual places, and I am presently rewiring the electrical system. The power steering pump leaks pretty bad, but we knew that before we bought it. Since we got it for not a whole lot, we can spend some serious $$ and still stay under the $20,000 that the truck was going to cost. Plus, the pig has CHARACTER.

As you will see, my wife got me a license plate frame, and I may end up with an iron pig for a hood ornament, at least for photos. I doubt it will remain there while driving on the road.

I am having one issue that maybe someone can help me with. The back window motor worked before I started tearing wiring out, and I have the panel off so the three wires that run the motor are accessible. But when I try to connect straight to a battery to lower the window and let down the tail gate I get nada. Am I missing something?? It seemed pretty straight forward to me. It seems like a good battery, and the only thing I could think of was that the motor was pulling to many amps for the battery. Does the pig have to be running to lower the rear window so the alternator runs that little motor.

The back window should go up and down without the truck running.

The power rear windows seem to cause a lot of headaches. Make sure you rule out the safety switch that is on the driver side. It is a plunger style switch that is accessible with the tailgate down.

Saying Hi

Hey there all,

Its great to find that somewhere lurking on the internet was an FJ55 Community. I am in Australia and have not been able to find a "local" forum so hope you guys don't mind as my Car club doesn't do much 4x4 stuff.

I have just bought a 1/74 FJ55 and driven it the 2000 od ks (1200 miles) home back to my place. A few issues and 1 Tow truck along the way.

It is a 4 Speed floor shift with the 3.9l F155 Petrol engine. She needs a lot of work but I am looking forward to it. Hopefully you guys can help me out with parts chasing and some required upgrades.

Thanks

Anything Toyota and 40 years old is hard to get in decent condition over here so most of my Toys have involved interstate travel to purchase. This one is a mixed bag. It was one owner and well maintained until 2009. Since then it had not been serviced or maintained and pretty well neglected.

It will need a lot of love but the visible rust is all low down so should be an easy enough fix. The big challenge at the moment is finding the NOS parts I want for it. I tried to order all new lights and lenses for it but there is next to nothing available from Toyota Locally.

Try 4x4world.com.au for lights. They may not be listed on their website, so best to email request.

I know nothing about Australian geography, but there's a salvage operation on Adelaiide called ELS (Early Land Cruiser Spares) that seems to have a continual supply of salvage Pigs.

NOS Pig parts are hard to find, period, but you're in a better location to find than we are here.

Congrats Toyman for your find, and welcome.

Funny, on your picture I thought it was mine...
