Alright folks,

It's time to put those fancy RTTs, Awnings, Fridges, on board water heating systems, Traction mats, espresso and margarita makers, leaf blowers (yes, it's a thing now) to use for reals. The temps down south are cooling down and the leaves are changing so it's prolly a decent time to run NMBDR New Mexico Backcountry Discovery Route (NMBDR) from south to north. I'm not sure how much of this we can do but I'm figuring on taking the Friday and possibly the Mon off to get a four day weekned outing.

I'm not too keen on going all the way to Dell city, TX to start this adventure but hoping to jump into the trail on the NM side based on the experience from John and Steve. The thought of driving the interstate to TX is unappealing to me. I think some of us has done part of this trail system in the southern part of NM but prolly not the northern part of NM.

Pipe up which weekend is good for you and let's get the planning started.

This should be a stock-ish rig friendly with the exception of the section near the ghost town of Chloride, NM which is a tad rocky but nothing crazy. I towed a camper through this section couple of autumns ago so it's a ho hum yawn fest but you do need to pay attention. I think a good set of all terrain tires is about all you really need so that you can air down for comfort and reduced puncture factor.

As always, these trips are dogs and kids friendly. I'll have Isabelle on the 13th but not on the 6th. Children must be leashed, dogs can do whatever.

Yeah i’d start just west of Carlsbad Caverns on Queens Highway and hit the dirt there. The other option would be to catch it southeast of Alamogordo before you get into the mountains, Piñon would be a good spot to do that.

A subi could do all of it with the right driver and the worst part is at Chloride in the creek and one loose hill climb. Shrug...

I’ve done everything except highway 60 to 550 and I believe John has done everything except 60 to 40.

Larry - I'm not sure if I want to do the NMBDR or go with you to Amsterdam  I LOVE that town.

Let me put in for Fri+Mon time off request for the 6th. It'd be easier to take time off when I don't have Isabelle as I don't like her to miss school if it all possible.

I had the dates wrong when I had isabelle, fixed it now.

I'll need the input from John and Steve on our Thurs night meetup place but as @lurch suggested, somewhere near Pinion, NM might be a good choice. Pinion seems to be located in a flat area but somewhere in the Pinion/Weed might be good.

@pappy, if you leave town the earliest, you might be able to find a decent spot and ping me on the megalink or send me a text.

Thoughts?

I have some cattle rancher friends that live about 15 miles east of Pinon that might be accommodating if you want to camp out on their property. Fair warning, they are fairly conservative homeschoolers just like my family.

i recall weed being the first place of big pine trees, south of that was mostly large pinion? guess it depends on how far south you want to start and if you are coming from east or west?

I've been looking at the maps. It sounds like the start will be at Weed. Going down the BDR south from Weed on Rd171 there is FS160. It looks like there might be some camping about a mile down. I will probably head that way from Weed. Turn off at 32* 44.301 -105* 31.759.

Damn retirees, they get all the free time they want :flipoff2: Pure envy talking here.

steves map shows our campspots... those should be noted as complete damage control necessity, not cherry picking. we were not miserable, but made the best of what we had on our timeline. my bigger point is don't think we knew what we were doing and try and emulate where we camped at the expense of something else.

On my map at “camp spot potential”... I’d shot for that area. It was a valley with green grass, a stream and trees on the hill sides.

Then I’d shoot for northwest of Ruidoso for night 2, nice spots around 33.46648* -105.78117*

Let me know if you have the coords for this site so that I can study it further. Thx.

32.72552* -105.62160* (corrected)

There are several spots along the road that looked pretty good in that area.

Awesome, thank you.

I punched it into GMap, here's what I got. Please confirm if this is the location you're thinking of. It doesn't appear to match your map. Alternatively, punch the coordinates into your Gmap and show me the link!

Ya, that doesn't look right. It's way off the NMBDR.

You have to decode the correct coordinate...one of them is correct now figure out where it hits the trail

Jk I had a copy error I corrected it above
