I have blocked of some time at the end of September to finish the northern portion of the New Mexico Back Country Discovery Route (AKA NMBDR) via overlanding/camp out. We will start south of Grants NM on Thursday evening, September 25th and head toward the 1st camp spot Friday - Rock Bowl Beach. We will enjoy the annual Cowboy Breakfast on Saturday morning, September 26th. After the breakfast, we will proceed north, taking it easy and covering the remaining sections until we finish up near Antonito CO. I am thinking it will take 3 additional nights to finish at a slower/easy pace. My preference will be to take it easy, shorter days, more time relaxing / hiking / camping. If we can stretch it out for 4 or 5 nights - great!

It will be very easy for members to either peel away early and/or join late, as it only takes a few hours from ABQ to reach our prevailing position and I will be connected the entire time via Starlink!

Do chime in if anybody would like to consider joining. I will keep this intro thread updated as this unfolds.

What is the NMBDR??
The NMBDR is a relatively easy, pre-defined, back country off road/gravel road trail system that spans approximately 1,200 miles across New Mexico. This trail system is an effective way to see the vast, diverse state of New Mexico and get back into remote areas that most never see.

It is a great way for those that have limited experience camping out of their rigs to learn what works for them and shake down their new set ups. This route is somewhat stock friendly. Most of the trails are made up of improved and less improved BLM/Forest Service roads and private roads. Ideally, you would have a low gearbox, AT tires, some skids/armor. You can also consider dragging along a small off-road trailer, if you are into the extra effort/challenges. Most of us use RTT but it is no problem to use ground tents as well.

I like to refer to this type of overlanding as "the dollar store" trail. Because most of the days you are passing through various towns, all with the provisions you might ever need or want. So it is forgiving for those that have less experience overlanding/unplugging or others that just want things to be easy.

Looking forward to a great time. Cheers!

I’m pretty sure I’m up for it.

OK - getting ready to finish up the northern section of the NMBDR. My plan is to camp near the spot that I peeled away from earlier in the year, just south of Grants off section 6 of the NMBDR on Thursday night - September 25th.

I will take State Road 53 south (pavement) from I-40 to the intersection of Zuni Canyon Road (FS 50) and SR 53. I plan to proceed north on the improved Zuni Canyon dirt road until I find a nice place to peel off and camp - hopefully not too far from the pavement/dirt intersection. If things are like before, I will explore various spur roads so that camp will be off the main Zuni road. So you may or may not be able to visually see me from the Zuni Canyon Road (which is part of section 6 of the NMBDR trail).

My hope is that I will be able to post up a waypoint via Star link once I find camp. But if that doesn't work, I will also be monitoring 146.400 and you should get into range as you head north on Zuni Canyon Road.. If somebody gets there before me and finds a good spot, then I will try to find you. No worries.

The coordinates for the intersection of 53 and Zuni Canyon Road (FS 50) is 35.011330, -108.101816
Here is a google maps link to that intersection: Turn off Waypoint

DO post up of you plan to camp with me Thursday night. I likely wont get to camp until early evening.

I will be camping with you Thursday night if I can find you. I’m leaving in the early afternoon because I’m figuring 3 1/2 to 4 hours for me to get there as I am not going to go on I-40 except occasionally for very short bits. Will we be stopping in Grants on Friday morning to fuel up or should I fuel up in Grants before going to the meet up site?

Great news. We will be able to fuel up Friday when we pass through Grants. Your call if you want to top off Thursday before heading to camp.

Okay, sounds good. We’ll see where I stand fuel wise but I usually don’t miss an opportunity to fill up. I’m considering bringing a 5 gal extra diesel container, but I would have to carry it inside the van which I don’t like and probably won’t need anyway. If I can fill up in Grants, Cuba, Abiquiu, and Antonito, I should be good. I think there is now diesel available in Antonito.

I never needed to carry fuel while doing the NMBDR and my 200 range was low - maybe 250 miles max on a full tank. You should be good without extra fuel.

That’s what I’m thinking as well. I’m looking forward to this trip.

Meet you at RBB on Friday. I will spend the night there and breakfast Sat morning.

If anybody wants to find us, you can proceed north from SR53 on Zuni Canyon road (paved) a few miles, then turn left toward Oso Lookout. Proceed west on washed out road until you get to the sign that says "Primitive Road - Not Maintained". Stay left at the sign and continue on FS 187 for a .2 of a mile. You will see us camping off the road.
