Hey!

So, recently my land cruiser started overheating when idle for extended period of time. Accordingly i have replaced the following parts with new genuine toyota parts:
thermostat, waterpump, temperature sensor, fan clutch (radiator/engine), fan motor (ac/the fan inside the grille on the corner).

The radiator is new and was changed around an year ago and maybe 30k kilometers before.

But the problem still persists, and my mechanic doubts for it to be air bubbles causing the issue.

This issue is non-existent while driving, and when idling using only front ac it takes a long time to heat but while using both front and rear ac, the car heats up around 10 minutes of idling.

That sure sounds like either a bubble in the coolant or a bad radiator cap.

How hot is it there? Running AC can definitely put some heat in the system.

Heat goes around 43-46 these days. But as far as i can remember, it never increases the temperature even while idling for long time even at noon.

Can the new radiator be clogged in a year (i was using regular water instead of red fluid before)?

Will try the cap change.

Since you’ve replaced all those parts my guess would be a blockage or low coolant/coolant quality issue. Although rare, there are cases with radiator caps deteriorating and having pieces fall down blocking coolant flow.

Have you done a rad flush while changing all those other parts? Using Toyota coolant?

One of the mechanics checked through a camera inside the radiator and says that it is clogged. So i will get it cleaned and check back.

My question now in the mean time is, why did the new radiator get clogged so fast under 2 years?!

Did you ever have to top off coolant or was it sealed the whole time? Bad rad cap letting in dust/dirt/sand?
Let us know if you find out more and if your mechanic can identify the substance blocking flow.

I had to top off multiple times after changing radiator last year and before changing the water pump etc last week.

I just reread and saw you said you were using regular water. That’s your problem. Flush it and put in only genuine Toyota coolant. Surprised it went that long on water to be honest.

Oh so using water will make it go bad this soon? Thanks.

I will need to open and clean it. As flushing didn’t do much help. It’s still clogged.

Will get back to you after i do that as it’s weekend here right now. (Friday/Saturday)

Honestly you might need a new radiator, I’m not sure how much water vs coolant you had but it might have calcified inside. Good luck and let us know.

I was using full water tbh. It’s my bad/my mechanic who filled it that way. And i wasn’t thinking much about it that time.

All i wanna know is that if it’s water calcification, is around 2 years enough to clog it or there needs to be another cause for it to become clogged so soon?

Again, if it were me I wouldn’t mess with it and just replace it. You are not supposed to run water so who knows the extent of the damage. Doesn’t seem worth the effort.

Thank your lucky stars it still runs.

It’s part calcification but also part corrosion. Aluminum can corrode in pure water, especially with the introduction of heat. So it’s possible parts of the radiator core got thinner and weaker than they should.

These vehicles were designed to run coolant, which helps avoid boiling but also provides lubrication for the water pump and corrosion prevention for the radiator and engine itself.

Are you in Riyadh? I had a similar issue. I can recommend a workshop.

Did you ever fix the overheating issue?

I'm having the same exact problem minus the radiator issue with my LC200. I changed all cooling components recently, all the way from the clutch fan to the water pump.
it still overheats when idle.
