As i was working on replacing my wing vent weatherstripping, I noticed in the channels a green color when my entire truck us white...i have a 73 FJ40 but the color seems to match the Emerald Green which looks like it was only available til 72 but not 73...is there a way to determine the orig color from the vin?

Not from the VIN, but if you shine a light up under the dashboard it's unlikely that they painted all the way up under there. There are plenty of examples of year-end carry-over parts. I wouldn't be surprised if they carried over a color for some time either.

My 40 has this plate on the firewall, on the passenger side of the engine compartment. This plate describes the engine, transmission and color-code.

Oddly, my 40 is painted some variety of beige, but has an old, faded red in various places. I assumed the original color was red.

But, when I checked the color code on the plate (above), itsays '641' - I checked a color chart and apparently '641' equates to 'dune beige'...

So, my 40 was either dune beige, then red, the biege again - or ???

Is the plate above not present on your 40?

your plate is a handy little piece of info, wish mine had such info, would answer me a few questions about paint, plant and orig tranny...if my truck has a similar plate, I am yet to discover it...i hope as i navigate yards of wiring and what have you, i might stumble over it...does emailing he VIN directly to Toyota help?

I was always told they didn't start adding the plate until somewhere between 74-76. Not sure if that is true. My 75 doesn't have one, but it was pretty mangled by the PO before I bought it.

Sorry -I can't answer that - while I don't plan to repaint my 40, it would be nice to know the original color.

Unless someone else on here has a better idea, you might consider contacting someone who has been associated with Toyota for a long time - like cruiserdan or beno.

Dan has given me a couple of tips for identifying dates - like a metal tag (if it still exists) on a bolt, between the carb and the horn and another marking on the dizzy...

data plates got more information when they went from fender (67-77 model?) to firewall (78-84) AFAIK

BTW 58-66 was also on the firewall... but... limited info like the fender

door tags started in 69'

soooo.... you should have a door tag and fender tag.... neither will have color info... toyota will be of no help

my 64 wagon, 65 Fj40, 67 fj45, 78 and 82 are all on the firewall(as well as door jamb on 78. 82). I have no clue about any other years I dont own....so they may have been elsewhere

that plate is supposed to be on the ps fender.

is there a way to determine the orig color from the vin?

No. Not for the "early" years. They did not care, apparently, at the factory for people restoring 40 years later...
You'll have to investigate nooks & crannies and ask yourself what color you'd like.

my discovery of the green on the white doors, that dont fit all that well either, is leading me to believe that the truck was originally white, as white is everywhere, but the doors on the truck are not the originals...which sucks as i didnt know this purchasing my "all original" FJ...which for the most part it is but the door discovery is a minor let-down...

color is not important at this point, getting my cluster lit up is more important so i know how fast i am going in the dark...happy trails

Plz show some pictures

pictures are not the best but you can see green in the wing vent weatherstripping channel as well as behind the screws holding in the top of the wing vent...the other photos are showing the amount of gap near the door handle, along the top and along the hinge side of the door...same deal on both sides...you can also see where the window frame is a separate piece from the bottom half of the door that is held in by bolts from the interior...is this normal for a 73?

My memory did not serve me this time LOL

I went back and check several hundred pictures .... i had seen several in 67 on the fender... one was an 45V (aussie 45LV)

this was definitly the change over point

is your 67fj45 a 66 sold in 67?

ToyGuy.... doors rot out at the bottom.... they are the correct style doors... just not the original ones :) GREAT looking truck... you will enjoy may years with that beauty
